I have done tutoring for 6 years with private companies and schools and as an independent tutor. I have worked with many students aging K through adult. Subjects handled have been SAT and ACT test preparation, math from prealgebra through trigonometry, study skills, reading, writing, phonics, and general (all school subjects). I am a patient and caring as well as persistent tutor. My educational background is in physics and math (through Ph.D.).
My approach with students is to first get them to enjoy the work. Then zero in on the student's individual needs. I give help when a student is stuck. But especially in math I don't give all the steps of the entire exercise, rather letting the student do as much as they can to enhance their confidence and learning. I frequently work by questioning the student to see where their understanding limit is before explaining a concept as needed.
One approach that most students ignore but can help them when they are having trouble in one or more subjects is study skills. I consider myself an expert in this area. The organization and accountability of study skills helps students to work smarter rather than harder to get better results. Study skills, by organizing all areas of their work, help the student get done with school work faster. This gives them extra time to do what they like. I get great joy out of seeing a student progress.
Having done tutoring for 6 years, I have discovered that I am passionate about tutoring and my students. I get great happiness out of seeing a student progress. For me, the greatest pleasure comes when I have explained a concept three different ways and finally the light goes on. The student says "I get it!" or "That's easy, why didn't you say that the first time."
