Hello and welcome!
I am a CA credentialed and experienced middle school teacher; math/Pre-Algebra is my favorite subject to teach (also experienced with English/Language Arts and 6/7 Ancient History Social Science core). Currently, I'm substituting for Union, Moreland, and Campbell districts and have had the opportunity to work with students grades 3 through 5 (which I've found delightful). I appreciate the the compassionate understanding necessary , the elementary grade content, and the strategies with articulation as well.
My favorite subject to teach is Math/Pre-Algebra (grades 3-9). It is an important bridge, often misunderstood, and can be presented with fun questing metaphor strategies. It offers a map to inspire and empower the math super hero within.
Unlike other subjects, I've noticed most people have strong valid feelings/opinions about math. The change of focus from concrete to abstract conceptual is important, and yet different, but can be lots of fun (at any age). The first step on the adventure towards success is to believe you can and align your self talk.... Next, have the right guide for the journey to help you collect and develop strategies and also support and challenge you onward.
My BA and Multiple Subject teaching credential are from UCLA. This credential includes single subject authorizations in mathematics and English and is California NCLB compliant current.
Study skills and organization are key, in grades 3-9. Learning how to read for meaning, finding evidence in the text, extracting information needed, writing with structure, knowing how to answer questions best, learning how to study smarter, and having follow-through to the end, are all critical skill-set pieces. It's like the prep work of having your GPS, tools, instructions, decoder, and experience, to decipher and find what you're looking for; the how to do the task, when and where to bring it and be able to own it.
One of my long time interests is fantasy fiction and reading. I was a Harry Potter club sponsor at a middle school for seven years. Currently I'm taking animation classes at De Anza to expand my understanding of story telling and explore the creative mediums available. So, I'm also open to tutoring there before my class.
I enjoy showing the learning fun, providing a solid foundation, and giving students that edge. It's like coaching/watching an elementary student make their first basket. All that belief about being too small is busted. Socrates is quoted, "Wisdom begins in wonder". Let's bring back that wonder with a strategy care kit for your child's learning needs.
I am grateful for this WyzAnt opportunity to introduce myself and be considered as your tutor/coach/guide. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing the sites on the learning adventure.
