Moderate-Severe Special Education Credentialed Teacher

Hello, my name is Erin and I have worked with students and adults with special needs for the past 12 years. I began working as a teacher’s aide for 4 years for the County Office of Education in an Elementary School. I loved the job and decided on a career as a Special Education Teacher.

While getting my BA in Child and Adolescent Development at San Jose State, I continued to work as an aide and then moved on to work at two Adult Agencies. At those agencies I worked in the Supported Employment Program and the Independent Living Program. I assisted adults at job sites, worked on life skills in and out of the home, and helped my clients learn how to use the public transportation system as we focused daily on travel training.

Once finished with my BA I earned my Education Specialist Credential for students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities at San Jose State University. I also began teaching in the Autism Project in an elementary school and then transferred to a high school campus where I have taught a range of students with moderate to severe disabilities for the past five years.

I am in the process of finishing my Level II Education Specialist Credential within the next few weeks and I plan to start a Masters Program in Special Education at San Jose State in the Fall.

My specialties are in Functional Academics, Life Skills, Travel Training, Community Based Instruction and Transition Planning. I believe that every person has something special to offer the world and I love helping students/adults realize all that they are capable of. I will work with your student in whatever area(s) you are interested in. In my own classroom I enjoy tailoring instruction to each individual, and I would love the opportunity to do the same for your student.

About Me:
I have twin 2-and-a-half year girls and a two month old. As much as I love my job I wanted to spend as much time as I can with my children so I have taken a leave of absence from teaching until all my children are in school full time. I still want to stay active in the Special Education Community and feel that tutoring would be a perfect way for me to do so.

Phonics

Although most of the students I teach are in high school, reading tends to be a very difficult area for them. A few of my students are working on basic site words that will help them function in the community (ex.Danger, Stop, Pay Here, etc.) the rest having been using the Edmark Reading Program. Special Needs

For the past 12 years, all of my jobs have been working with children and adults with special needs. I have worked as a teachers aide, in-home support provider, job supervisor and most currently, as a teacher. I have worked with all kinds of people with various disabilities and abilities. I currently have a Level I Eduction Specialist Credential and will be finishing up my Level II within the next few weeks.

ADD/ADHD

Many of the students that I have worked with have multi or dual diagnoses. Often times, this includes Cognitive Delays paired with ADD/ADHD. I feel comfortable supporting students with Attention or Hyperactivity issues and am in a big believer in changing the physical environment or teaching style to fit the needs of each student.

Autism

Twelve years ago, I started my career in Special Education as a teachers aide for the Autism Projects in Santa Clara County. Since that time I have worked with numerous students and adults who are are on the spectrum. I am familiar with the TEACCH model which I have used in my classroom and also with the use of visuals, schedules, and positive behavior techniques as appropriate to each student.

Hard Of Hearing

Over the years, I have worked with multiple students and adults who were deaf of hard of hearing. Many have had assistive technology devices, including hearing aides, microphones and communication devices. I also know a few basic signs in American Sign Language.
