I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics and statistics and a master's degree in computer science from Monmouth University, New Jersey. I have taught pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry for two years, and elementary math for three years to kids ranging in ages from 6 to 12 yrs. I believe every kid has the potential to succeed with proper guidance. If kids are exposed to a variety of methods with which to approach a given type of problem, it will establish a strong conceptual understanding through hands on activities in early age. It is necessary to understand their weaknesses and utilize multiple methods of explaining the idea.
While teaching, I came across a student who had problems with the concepts taught in the previous year (Pre-Algebra). This was affecting his comprehension of new concepts, and because he was unable to understand the material he began lacking self-confidence. I reestablished his previous concepts as we went along, consequently, increasing his desire to learn. In another case, my student was very intelligent; however, she had a fear of testing. I encouraged her and presented tips on how to approach the test paper and overcome the fear of testing. Eventually, this allowed her to improve her test scores and to go beyond her potential. Lastly, one of my most hard-working and intelligent student was unable to grasp certain concepts in a particular section. The help of visual aids, hands on learning and changing the method of explaining allowed the student to excel in geometry. These experiences promote my belief that each case is unique, requiring individual guidance to aid students to reach their goals.
