I am a calculus tutor. Most of my students are from Evergreen High School. I tutor mainly on pre-calculus, calculus AB and BC.
It is an easy job to give the correct answers directly to students. I prefer something better than that. I guide them to find the correct answers by themselves. So when they are in the test or exam, they can solve any problems. I show them the meaning behind each of exercises. What they are all about. How we should tackle the problems. How we are going to break down the big problem into some pieces and utilize which techniques to solve them. Calculus is all about it. For example, to solve an integration, we should know what kind of the problem. Is it trigonometry style or algebra style? If it is trigonometry style, what do we know about it? Do we know sin^2(x) + cos^2(x) = 1? It is too basic to use it. Then we need to know how to manipulate the basic formula to something like cos2x = 2cos^2(x) - 1 or 2cos^2(x) = cos(2x) + 1. Then from there we could integrate it directly or integrate by parts.
In short, currently I am a Software Engineering graduate student at San Jose State University. I got the AMATYC award (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges). To me, tutoring calculus is one of my hobbies, and playing Sudoku (numerical puzzle. It is really fun) is another one.
