I have limitless patience in assisting students in grades 3 through 6 with all subjects. Math, writing, and study skills are my favorites, but I enjoy working with students to improve their skills in all subjects. I can also tutor all ages of ESL students in conversation, reading, and writing. With more than 25 years of experience in teaching grades 3 through 6, working with ESL students of all ages, and teaching piano and general music, I am good at explaining concepts, practicing skills, and helping students use their strengths to overcome their weaknesses. Using games and online activities are two of the best ways I've found to help 21st century learners strengthen academic skills, but I'm also flexible and want to work with each student to discover how he or she learns best.

Reading

Reading is important for success in every other subject in school, so it's essential that students be able to read with fluency and comprehension. Skills such as picking out key ideas, determining meaning of words within the context of a passage, and rephrasing sentences or paragraphs are skills that good readers share; all three can be improved with practice and guidance.

ESL/ESOL

I've taught ESL students of all ages, from pre-school through adult. Most of my students have been college students or working adults. I've studied linguistics and am knowledgeable about how people learn languages. Vocabulary, spelling, and grammar are only part of learning to speak English; idioms, usage, and conversation are equally important, but difficult to learn on one's own. I'd be happy to help you improve your skills in English for everyday uses, school, or work.

Elementary Math

Math is more fun than just about any other subject! If you like games and puzzles, you can learn to like math. From addition and subtraction, to multiplication and division, basic math facts need to be rock solid in order to be successful when moving on to decimals, fractions, percentages, probability, and into pre-algebra. I have both a BA and an MA in music. I have taught both class and private piano for many years.
