I have a passion for teaching students and building their self esteem and their confidence in learning. I meet them where they are at academically and personally. I use learning styles (i.e. kinesthetic [hands-on], audio, visual) appropriate each students in collaboration with the parents requests. I work 150% on engaging the student and motivating them to learn the subject matter.

My areas of expertise tutoring elementary school math and English and middle school, high school, college English. I also have special experience helping high school students write college essays.

Tutoring is not just a job. It is a 'calling' for me.

English

I have 6 years of experience teaching reading comprehension, analysis of literature, writing and presentation skills in English for elementary school, middle high school students and adults. I am very supportive, flexible and results oriented, working with students every step of the way to customize the sessions to meet their needs.

Elementary (K-6th)

I teacher K-6 students as a substitute teacher and as a tutor in Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Computers.

Phonics

I have taught children to read using phonics as a substitute teacher and a tutor. I am familiar with many books, movies, flash cards and other resources for teaching phonics. I use different methods depending on the student's learning style, such as teaching visual learners with pictures, kinesthic learners with games such as matching object to pictures of object that begin with the letter sounds, audio learners with songs, etc.

Study Skills

I am qualified to teach study skills. I know how to teach students how to take notes in class and while reading, how to get an overview of their reading before they start reading the details so they remember what they read, and scheduling the proper intervals to review the material so it is remembered.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with ESL students in both elementary school and high school, teaching them grammar and helping them with their writing. I have an excellent at teaching grammar, writing, speaking and reading in English. I am very good at breaking things down so my ESL students have easily been able to grasp the concepts.

I am a very warm, supportive and encouraging person. I look forward to helping ESL students become fluent speakers and writers.

Career Development

As the coordinator of the a high school's College and Career Center, for 3 years from 2008 – 2011, I developed tutorials, counseled students and taught workshops on career planning, determining and developing volunteer work plans, resume writing, starting a business, job interviewing, and job hunting strategies and skills.
