I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Davis in December of 2010, with a degree in Medieval Studies and a minor in History. However, I have tutored both these and several other subjects with students from the ages of 9 to 22. I hope to instill a passion for learning, and have delivered results with every one of my students.
With several years in the AVID program, I have experienced tutorial sessions of many kinds. I have picked out the most effective parts of each of the methods I have seen, and wish to use them to enhance the education of any student I work with. I rarely answer a student directly, preferring to lead them with questions back through their own mind, until they come upon the answer. When this is not possible, I walk them through the process step by step, then return to the beginning and have them show me the steps, as to be assured that they understood what happened.
I have experience with tutoring groups of students, up to six or seven at a time, but have also spent many hours working one on one with students. Though I took few math courses in college, I am highly skilled in High School math, and find it to be on of the easier subjects to tutor. My collegiate background is in Medieval European History, though through that I have become a skilled researcher and writer, with the ability to pass along those same skills.
I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree from San Jose State University, and am now only a year away from completing it. I substitute teach during the day, and use the afternoons to tutor.
My ACT and SAT students have both seen significant increases, ranging from four or five points on the ACT to nearly 500 points on the SAT. To see this kind of increase takes several weeks, but is certainly possible.
