I am a former high school English teacher who gave up teaching for a long career as a technical editor. As an editor, I was able to apply my teaching skills to my own work, which included helping writers learn proper spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
While working for a major telecommunications company, I voluntarily mentored software engineers from Asian countries. I taught them to speak clearly and help them to understand English. I also edited their documents, both on paper and in direct discussion, which resulted in greatly improved writing skills. All were very appreciative, and several made sure that my manager knew what I had accomplished.
I do not work with students younger than 16; older students are usually much more willing than younger people to work hard learning to speak, read, and write English as a second language.
In addition, I am unable to tutor on Saturdays and Sundays because that is the only time I can be with my grandchildren.
