I am currently pursuing my second bachelor's degree. I am a Computer Science and Engineering junior attending Santa Clara University. I live in San Jose on school days and Santa Rosa on weekends.
I actually began my Computer Science program at my alma mater, the University of Cincinnati, in January 2012. While at UC, I worked in a Level 1 technical support position at the College-Conservatory of Music, helping students, faculty and staff solve their technical concerns over the phone or escalating issues beyond my ability to Level 2. I began Level 2 tech support duties over the summer, before moving back to California in August.
I graduated in 2009 from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati with my first degree, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Electronic Media, with a focus in Audio Production. I also earned a Business Minor and a Certificate of Asian Studies. I then moved to Belmont, CA worked as a recording engineer at a recording studio, where I had the additional responsibility of teaching new interns how to use the facility and interact with clients.
While pursuing my EMedia degree, I worked in the Faculty Technology Resources Center (FTRC) assisting faculty and instructors in the use of various technologies, from scanning documents using OCR readers, to converting files, to digitizing video, to simply using a Word Processor. After a year and a half, I was split off with two other managers into a new department called the Instructional Design group, where we created web applications for instructors to use in the online courses. I taught myself how to use Flash and advanced ActionScript and was a core programmer on at least 15 different projects.
I attended elementary through high school at Mariemont City School District, a public school system with fairly high standards. I maintained the honors tracks in English, Math and Science and took AP courses in Physics, Calculus, Computer Programming and American History. Before my 9th grade year, I taught myself HTML and began doing freelance web design. I continue to teach myself new techniques, technologies and coding languages. In the 8th grade, I taught myself how to run the sound system in the high school auditorium and took up the mantle of sound engineer for most of the plays and musicals through my Senior year. The few times I was not behind the sound board, I took small parts on stage or in the chorus. At these times, I taught others how to run the sound system. I began playing trumpet in the 4th grade and participated in the Marching, Jazz, Pep and Concert Bands through high school. After high school, I took two years to travel, work, and play trumpet in two bands. I worked several jobs in the food industry during this time, taking leadership roles in two of them.
Several of my roles at certain times have been that of teacher, leader, mentor or tutor, and I feel I have succeeded admirably in every attempt I've made to fill those roles: helping friends and classmates learn subjects that they find daunting, teaching new sound technicians in the high school theater, being a team leader in the kitchen, and tutoring faculty in the use of new technologies.
In every case, I have made an effort to understand how the student is most able to learn, i.e. to which methods and language they are most responsive and receptive. Once I understand that, I find I am able to break down the concepts of whatever subject they are struggling to understand and explain it to them in an easier to grasp manner.
