Ready to learn AND have fun? I'm ready to help! The best way to become good at something is to be bad at it first. (Translation: You have to try in order to succeed!) I love to try new things and learn everything I can about the world around me. Won't you join me?
I attended Barnard College of Columbia University in the City of New York, where I received a great liberal arts education and majored in Environmental Science and Policy for about 3 years before taking some time off to work in the "real world" your parents like to tell you about. (I have worked in accounting and also did some work for the National Park Service and a NASA contractor.) I'm a self-sufficient adult now, but I didn't start out knowing how to do everything!
Now a graduate of University of Maryland at College Park, I have my Bachelor's of Science degree in Geography, GIS & Computer Cartography, which is a fancy way of saying I do maps, computers and science all together. I played classical piano and both jazz and classical trumpet for 10 years, and studied French in high school and college. I also grew up in a bilingual household (English and Tagalog) so I have always been interested in foreign languages, especially in how they appear as word roots in the interesting (and sometimes totally confusing) language we call American English.
I have over five years of experience tutoring students of all ages in several subjects, including:
*math and reading for K-6 students through America Reads/America Counts and private in-home sessions
*middle school math and language development through private in-home sessions
*mentoring and homework help for grade 7-12 students at Barnard's after-school Liberty Program
*one-on-one SAT, PSAT, GRE, ASVAB and other standardized test help
*French and calculus tutoring for fellow college students at Barnard
*geography and statistics tutoring for college and continuing education students
I love to work one-on-one or in groups of up to four students. I find that a holistic approach is best, so I am always open to being a sounding board for all topics as long as mom and dad say it's okay that we occasionally talk about things other than the subject I am tutoring. As a bona fide adult, I love to help young people learn other non-academic things like how to balance a checkbook or find the nearest grocery store. I'm willing to work hard if you are! Contact me when you are ready and let's grow together.
