Welcome! My name is David F., and I run a one man tutoring business.
For the past 15 years, I have been helping students achieve their academic goals and improve their fundamental math and English skills. I work with kids and adults of all ages, teaching all lessons personally. My students find me patient and gifted at explaining difficult concepts from multiple perspectives.
Tutor and Author: When you or your children work with me, you know you are being taught by someone who has not only mastered the material, but in many cases written it. I have co-authored two guidebooks to the Graduate Records Exam, or GRE, published by the prestigious publishing house, Barron's.
My newest book teaches 300 of the most frequent SAT words using funny, full-color cartoons and creative mnemonic devices.
I have always believed in making education fun and engaging. My self-published classic, The First Fun SAT Book, teaches the most important strategies for the test using concise, easy-to-remember lessons.
Areas of Focus: I specialize in the following areas:
• Test Prep for most standardized exams including the HSPT, SSAT, ISEE, COOP, PSAT, PLAN, SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT.
• Schoolwork and homework help. Many of my clients are elementary, middle, and high school children, who meet me once per week to improve their grades and keep up with their classes.
• Math: all levels including basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, pre-cal, calculus, and statistics.
• English: reading comprehension, vocabulary development, grammar, essay writing, writing and editing skills, college personal statements.
Background and Experience: I graduated from Columbia University in 1991 with a BA in mathematics and completed a year of graduate school in the Columbia University Mathematics Department in 1992. Before starting my own tutoring business, I was trained and employed by two companies for two years: The Math Set and Advantage Testing, both of Atlanta, GA. In 2004 I founded a business which I have directed until the present. I have worked with hundreds of students from public and private schools across the Bay Area, including Lowell, SOTA, Lick-Wilmerding, UC Berkeley, the San Francisco School, University High School, Saint Ignatius, and many others. For a combined 10 years, I conducted on-site, comprehensive SAT prep classes at the International High School (FAIS/IHS) and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep.
Rates: My usual rate is $75 per full hour lesson for one-on-one tutoring in all subjects. There are two ways to save: 1) Students may request a sliding-scale, financial-aid discount rate of $65 or $70 per hour, 2) Students who share a tutorial pay the reduced rates of $45 per student for two-on-one tutoring, or $35 each for three-on-one. In order to maintain these affordable rates for all, I must ask clients to cover the fee for all appointments cancelled less than 24 hours in advance.
Parent and Volunteer: I am the proud parent of three children myself and am happy to give back to the community by volunteering as a classroom tutor about two hours per week in their elementary school.
Word on the Street: I often overhear my students saying, "I learned more in one hour with David than in one week of math at school."
