As an educator, helping students understand new and difficult material is not only what I do on a regular basis, it's what I love to do. I have over fifteen years of experience in tutoring and teaching math and science to various people, from children in middle school to graduate students. Over the years, I have also participated in various workshops, seminars, and conferences focused on learning styles and teaching methods, which has helped improve both my tutoring skills, as well as my enthusiasm to apply this information. I received my bachelor's degree in biology from UC Berkeley, and have a Ph.D. from Harvard. Having graduated from two highly-competitive universities, I also am experienced in the types of expectations and standards that are expected of their student population. This has given me insight into how to properly prepare students to be successful at attending such institutions of higher learning. I also have teaching experience at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State, and Harvard.
Through my many years of teaching and tutoring, I have found there to be a few basic principles that have proven to be productive. I believe in walking the students through the key concepts so they can gain a foundational understanding of the key concepts, rather than just memorizing the material. It's important that the students are able to use their new-found knowledge to think logically about the concepts such that one could determine whether a fact or conclusion makes sense. Beyond the material itself, I like to review the different study methods the students are using and offer new, personalized tips.
I hope to show my students the same patience and passion for learning that others have given to me. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
