I'm an experienced native U.S. English and social studies teacher with 4 years of tutoring experience and 8 years of teaching experience in middle school, high school and college settings. I tutor students so they can build a strong foundation as active learners, understand and integrate new concepts, and reach their full potential as intrinsically motivated learners. I also understand how student learning is affected by psychosocial, motivational and emotional factors as a psychologist with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.
I decided to become a teacher after living in Kyoto,Japan, as a high school exchange student. I worked with Japanese English teachers on their lessons and classroom activities, which was fun and rewarding. After completing a B.A. in Social Studies Education and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), I taught around the globe in Bahrain, Costa Rica, India & Taiwan. These were fun, challenging and rewarding experiences! As a lead teacher, I designed lesson plans, quizzes, debates, tests and problem-based learning activities.
While group learning can be interactive and engaging, it can also lead some students to feel marginalized. So, I understand the benefits of individual support through tutoring and mentoring. Right now, I offer 1-on-1 tutoring, 1-on-1 mindfulness-based tutoring and small group tutoring (2-3 students). I also coach students on their thesis research. Mindfulness research has been shown to improve focus, working memory and emotional reactivity. So, it can offer a lifetime of benefits!
When I work with students, I explain what they are going to learn, reinforce important concepts and breakdown projects into manageable tasks. Along the way, I ask reflective questions and stress how much they are learning and growing in order to improve their self-concept as learners. I encourage students to show me that they understand a new concept, instead of nodding with a "yes" or "no". My hope is that students can start owning and feeling empowered by their learning process so they can take on new challenges, instead of feeling overwhelmed by them. Along with learning tasks, I support students with organizational skills. I help them create timelines, so they can build a healthy pace of learning for homework assignments, projects and tests. Students also learn about healthy routines for test and presentation days.
For children, I make the learning process interesting and engaging in order to spark their curiosity. I also reinforce important concepts because I understand that their learning requires a solid foundation and structure. For older students, I may explain concepts more directly, or in different ways, for challenging topics. We review key points, apply new material and integrate themes in the long term. Since students learn in multiple ways, I adapt my teaching style depending on what they need to become successful learners. I have worked with ESL and Special Education teachers, so I can function well as part of a learning team. This helps target a student's learning needs in order to focus on important areas.
Through my academic and life experiences, I have developed an appreciation for the value of a good education. I want to provide this education to others as best I can. The fee for individual tutoring is $60/hour. I offer group tutoring (2-3 students) for a reduced fee. The cost for tutoring 2 students is $40/hour for each student. The cost for tutoring 3 students is $30/hour for each student. *Also there is no cost for the first session. You can give my services a try and determine if we are a good fit.
I am a kind and creative educator that has experience teaching in classroom settings, tutoring sessions and individual therapy. My students and their families compliment me on being a warm, skillful and patient educator that is dedicated to learning and personal development. I also reinforce study skills, when needed, so students have a solid foundation from which to grow, question and innovate. I am available for face-to-face tutoring, as well as on-line sessions. Since I understand the stresses of school, I offer "emergency" help sessions to regular students, when possible. I'd be happy to talk to you today about the opportunity to work with you.
