I am an experienced math teacher and tutor with 4 years teaching experience (1 high school including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, and 3 middle school including Pre-Algebra and Algebra I) and 7 years tutoring math (grade 1 - 6, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, SAT, ACT, SSAT, GRE, and GMAT.) I have been classroom and professional development experience in a number of different teaching strategies for learning disabilities and other learning difficulties (including ADD/ADHD.)

My interests include sports, art, and nature. I was an accomplished swimmer in high school and swam in college. I still love swimming and I enjoy many other sports, both participating in them and watching them on TV. I have always enjoyed going to art museums, in high school and college I took as many fine art and art history classes as I could, and I particularly enjoy when I can find intersects of art and math. Additionally, I enjoying spending time outside, whether it is hiking, camping, or just sitting on a beach. I endeavor to incorporate each of these areas into my math lessons and I love being able to do so with my students!

Some interesting methods I like to incorporate include: origami to teach angle measures and triangle properties in a tactile way, graphing data to make Pre-Algebra and Algebra skills less abstract, quilting patterns to prove the Pythagorean Theorem and to teach other concepts from Geometry and using graphing calculators to make Algebra concepts come more alive.

Emily's subjects

####
Algebra 1

I taught Algebra 1 for two years to students ranging from special needs doing a two year Algebra 1 class to an honors class. Some students find Algebra very abstract and I have a variety of methods to use with these students including tactile and graphing data the student is interested in. I worked with one student in Algebra 1 at the end of the year to prepare for her final and just a few weeks she raised her grade from a C- to B+.

####
Algebra 2

I have experience teaching Algebra 2 in the classroom to students with learning difficulties. I have tutored students in Algebra 2 as well. One student who I tutored throughout the school year maintained an A- average.

####
Geometry

I have experience teaching Geometry to students with learning difficulties. I have tutored students in Geometry and over the summer to prepare for Geometry. I like to make Geometry as visual and tactile as possible for my students so I use methods like origami, studying patterns, cutting and pasting, and even clay to make the subject come alive.

####
Prealgebra

I have 3 years of experience teaching Prealgebra in the classroom. My students have ranged from students with disabilities to high-level achievers. I like to use games to master some of the lower concepts and visual and tactile methods for the abstract Algebra concepts that are introduced in Prealgebra.

####
Precalculus

Precalculus is a difficult course and different schools cover different subject matter. I have come in contact with a number of these courses both in my own education and while tutoring. Thanks to my experience and my degree in math I am well prepared for any of these classes, whether they focus on limits, trigonometry, advanced algebra, probability or other subjects.

####
Trigonometry

Trigonometry has always been one of my strongest areas in math. I have tutored one student in Trigonometry specifically, and others as a part of another math class. In Trigonometry the fundamentals are essential so I maintain a strong focus on definitions and understanding early concepts throughout the course.

####
SAT Math

I am well versed in the math found on the SAT, having tutored a number of students in this area. I know both the concepts and the methods that the SAT uses that make concepts a student knows appear more difficult. I work with students both on content and strategy, which is essential to making the SAT math more manageable.

####
Probability

I took upper-division probability at USC, a difficult course that went well beyond the standards like: permutations, combinations, and standard distributions. I also understand the math behind the probability-specific functions. I have successfully tutored a student to prepare for a final.

####
ACT Math

I have taught all levels on the ACT other than Trigonometry. A student I tutored increased from a score of 21 to 29 on the math section of the ACT. I am well versed in all areas tested on the ACT and prepared to work with students of all levels, from those that need to work on the fundamentals of Algebra and Geometry to those going for top scores.
