Hi! My name is Melissa and I've been working as a tutor for over five years. A San Francisco native, I attended the University of California, Los Angeles where I graduated with honors. At UCLA I worked as a Peer Learning Facilitator at the Writing Center, where I helped students edit their papers and improve their writing process. As a result, I have experience helping students with a wide range of issues from going over grammatical errors to defining the focus of a paper to writing an effective thesis. While writing can be incredibly difficult, I can help make it not only easier but also a lot of fun (I'll admit it - I'm a writing nerd). To me, writing always comes down to one simple question, and I'd love to teach it to you! (I don't want to give it away, but I'll give you a hint - the question only consists of two words.) I'm very passionate about writing, and I truly relish sharing my joy with others. (To show you just how much I love writing, I was also the editor in chief of a college news magazine where I not only wrote and edited stories but also held weekly meeting, training workshops and one-on-one coaching sessions. So if you're interested in not only academic essays but also journalism, I can certainly help you!)
In addition to my work with writing, I also hold a certificate from UCLA's TESL/TEFL program. And I have previously worked with students on improving their reading skills - not just reading the actual words (which I can help with thanks to my experience with phonics), but also making sure they're reading in the most effective manner based on their end goals. Finally, I am a fluent French speaker (thanks to my experience in a K-12 bilingual school) and can help you with everything concerning the language - from grammar to conjugation to vocabulary. Not only can I help with the skills needed to pass academic tests, but I can also help ensure that you speak the language in a way that would allow you to travel through a French-speaking country.
