I am one of the more unique tutors and people you will come across in your life. My strengths as a teacher come from my vast experiences as a writer, student, language sensei and world traveler. I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cornell University in 2006. Since then I have done everything I could to expand my world view, increase my base understanding of eclectic wisdom, and improve as a writer and a human being.
After college I lived in New York City for three years gaining experience in the legal, publishing, television and radio industries. I also read extensively about every subject I could. Then I painted houses to earn money to travel around the world for seven months: India, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, China, Egypt, Germany and Ireland. I had an incurable case of the travel bug after that, and I wanted to understand my home country, so I traveled across America for two months, through the south, and visited Mexico.
After all of that travel I taught English in Japan for one year. I had two jobs which enabled me to gain experience teaching all ages, from 3 years old to 60 years old. This is where the majority of my teaching experience comes from.
When I completed my contract in Japan I moved across America, through the north. Last autumn I worked the wine harvest in Sonoma before starting a new teaching job in San Francisco. I currently teach ESL/TOEFL at the American Academy of English. I am also working on several books about my travels.
Through all of these adventures, I'd say the most valuable reward--besides real-life training in patience and courage--has been increasing my communication skills. I have met hundreds of people, and taught hundreds of students, and we always learn something from each other, no matter where we are coming from. I have taught many different styles of classes, but the style I have found most useful in enhancing my tutoring skills has been the conversational style practiced at one of my Japanese jobs. For an hour at a time I had to sit across from students and converse with them while improving their use of the English language. Once I mastered that skill I was able to set up my own private tutoring lessons.
If you would like me to tutor you in English or in any subject where you think I may have plenty of knowledge, I would be delighted to hear from you. I am a very positive, enthusiastic and upbeat teacher, and my number one goal for each experience is for you to feel the same way while we learn, and for you to come away from the lesson with more confidence, skills and excitement.
I teach from 9 am - 2 pm Monday-Thursday (hours may increase), so I am free to tutor at any times outside those hours.
You won't find a more interesting teacher out there!
