Hi,
I love coaching people so that they can express themselves through writing. I like to connect with each of my students to find specific ways to interest them in the writing process and to make writing an enjoyable process. I enjoy variety and therefore work with students of all ages and levels. I believe learning should be engaging, and that learning can be rigorous without being rigid. I am a disciplined and fun person, and bring these attributes to my teaching.
I have a Ph.D. in Education, with an emphasis in improving performance. I am a long-time college instructor and have also worked extensively with K-12 students. I am the mother of two: a fifth-grader and a third-grader, so am very involved in elementary school writing at this point in time, in addition to being a first-rate teacher for pre-teens, teens, and adults.
I have found that each student has specific learning strengths coupled with specific learning styles. I work to discover these in my students and to then teach my students strategies to maximize learning in the ways that are most efficient and comfortable for them. Over time, this approach leads to students struggling less with learning the basics and, instead, being confident writers able to synthesize what they learn into original works expressing their understanding of the world.
After we get to know each other, I prefer an ongoing tutoring relationship so that we both have a chance to see the teaching/learning we do come to fruition!
If I seem like someone you would like to study with, or have your child study with, then please get in touch!!
Best wishes,
Dr. J.
