Hi there!

My name is Matthew! I would like to help you become a Biology Rock Star! A little about me first... I have a masters in Biology from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi with emphasis on marine ecology, benthic ecology, field biology, and microbiology. I have worked various jobs including being a manager at Petsmart, working in a psychiatric hospital, as a bird of prey rehabilitation, an outreach educator, a lab monkey in a marine ecology lab, and a college Biology professor. I LOVE biology! If that makes me an uber-nerd...so be it! I will represent! I have a refined sense of humor that I like to incorporate into my sessions!

I think that science is fun, exciting, and imparts life skills to students that can be used inside and outside the academic world. With regards to teaching, at the most basic level I wish to teach the curriculum set forth by the course you are taking, but this is just the beginning! I go to great lengths to impart my passion and excitement about the field of Biology to my students and clients, and show them how it can be applied to their lives on a daily basis.

Being a kinetic learner myself, I know the importance of incorporating all of the different learning styles into the classroom environment, be it face-to-face or online. I was never taught how to make use of my particular learning style. I was often frustrated because in simply listening to lectures or reading a text I just was not “getting it.” Once I figured out I had to modify my methods of learning to match my learning style, not only did I succeed, I blew all of my previous attempts and expectations away! I use this past experience to impart the curriculum of your classes in a way that allows you to succeed, regardless of your primary learning style.

I like to use life experience as a practical guide to helping you with learning...and this may include some field trips as tutoring sessions if time and finances allow. There is a great wealth of biological activity in the San Francisco area, and all of it can be applied to your course work in some way, shape, or form!

Anatomy

Anatomy is the study of how the body is structured. It concentrates on cellular make up, tissues, organs, and systems. I have had three years' experience teaching human anatomy at the community college level. This subject can be difficult, because of the sheer volume of information that needs to be learned, but there are some helpful hints and ways I can teach you to look at the material that should make it easier for you to learn.

Physiology

Anatomy is the study of how the body is structured.... Physiology is the study of HOW those structures all work. I have had three years' experience teaching human physiology at the community college level.

Ecology

Ecology is the scientific study of how organisms live in and interact with their environment and other life in it. Both of my degrees have an emphasis in ecological approaches to studying Biology, and it is the subject I am most excited about. Ecology is the study of the interconnectedness all living things have to each other and the rest of the natural world. It takes the portion of biology that starts with organisms and works its way up to the functions within the biosphere.

Zoology

I have had 20+ years studying zoology in many capacities. I have worked in zoos, a tropical rainforest biome, wetlands, the ocean, lakes, rivers, streams, forests, and grassland prairies and studied the fauna in those ecosystems. I have 10 years' experience working with a bird of prey conservancy. I have taken courses in evolution, ecology, genetics, comparative physiology, ichthyology, herpetology, ornithology, mammalogy, Microbiology, and animal nutrition.

Microbiology

I have had 10+ years' experience working with microorganisms in classroom and lab settings. I have taught Microbiology at Coastal Bend College for 3 years. My experience working with microorganisms includes microalgae, bacteria, and fungi. Most of my students taking my Microbiology courses have been allied heath career track, so my courses have been built in the direction of Microbiology from a medical perspective. Nutrition

In addition to taking courses in my undergraduate and graduate careers that taught me about the nutrition requirements and metabolic processes of humans and other animals, I have taught a nutrition course at Coastal Bend College for the past three years. In addition to teaching my students about human metabolic requirements and processes, we focused on the eating habits of the students and how to make good choices for them and their families.
