As a parent concerned with education, I have volunteered for five years coaching students preparing for a local Academic Decathlon team, teaching specialized topics in History/Social Sciences, Literature and the like. Preparing and sharing interdisciplinary lessons in 'The Renaissance,' 'Medieval European History,' 'The Industrial Revolution,' 'The Civil War,' 'Civil Rights in America,' 'Space Exploration,' 'Climate Change' and 'Current Events' has been the most rewarding experience for me and for my teams.
It has always been my belief that a mentor with a passion for a subject will bring it alive for students. To help do this, I've developed several traditions for my teams that I'd like to continue: I quiz in a 'game show' format, so that I've actually had students request more reviews; I encourage students in making creative learning tools, such as lyrics or rhymes for memorization, and at the end of the term, I like to present students who rise to the challenge with a book in a topical area in which they have shown interest, so as to encourage them to take the next step in learning.
I am a life-long resident of the Bay Area (first moving to San Francisco twenty years ago), and have worked locally in Operations Management at the same firm for the past ten years. I am also a writer with two completed manuscripts and hold a degree in Economics.
