Hello,
Teaching is a gift to the teacher and the student. I have benefited from so many great teachers who really love what they do and it makes such a difference in their ability to reach a student. I aim to provide an experience that not only connects the student to the subject but also ignites their desire to learn, think critically and truly flourish.
My teaching career began at 12 years old when I became a young entrepreneur teaching piano and music composition from my basement. Since then I have taught piano, voice, general music, music composition, writing, math, reading and other studies. My students have ranged from 4 years old to mature adults. I have worked with autistic youth and other individuals with varying abilities in music and general education.
I hold a B.A. from Lawrence University and a Master's in Music from Manhattan School of Music. I have a concentration in Psychology and took Sociology of Education, which included a semester of classroom observation hours in Wisconsin. My passion for education has lead me to teach in Chicago, New York, and Vienna, Austria. In Vienna I worked one on one in ESL, piano, voice, English writing, comprehension and group music classes for children and caregivers. In New York I've worked in a Career Development Office, after school programs and ESL instruction for adults. Most recently I worked at Harlem Childrens Zone in a creative pre-kindergarten program called Harlem Gems. It was a great experience holding their attention for 8 hours a day with indoor and outdoor activities including math, music, movement, art, science and of course classroom behavior.
My journey in San Francisco begins in August 2012, and I am looking for tutoring opportunities that we both can benefit from.
With compassion,
Christine
