I am recent graduate of The University of San Francisco Master of Arts International Studies program. I have 9 years of Spanish study completed, including over 4 years spent in independent travel and cultural immersion. I have an undergraduate degree in Spanish linguistics from the University of Arizona, one of the most prestigious Spanish language programs in the country. I have been an advisor and research assistant to colleagues and professors at both Universities and enjoy the challenge of speaking, reading and writing the language with anyone who will listen.
My experience in tutoring is broad. I began as a translator/interpreter for Federal District court in Tucson after graduating from U of A and also aided in establishing a Spanish club for a local magnet High School. Since then, I have been coaching my peers in language studies at USF and have established yet another Spanish club in SF: the MAIS Spanish club. I am a capable and dedicated student of the Spanish language and more than competent at the art of teaching the language skills to all ages and all levels.
What qualifies me for tutoring? I have an intellectual need to make things easy to understand, not only for my own benefit, but for those who rely on my explanations. I have dedicated my entire adult life to the practical application of Spanish to a non-native speaker's daily life, including learning Portuguese to better understand the lineage of linguistic structure of romantic verbs. This has proven extremely helpful for reproducing the correct sounds of the Spanish language in common speech. I believe the most powerful tool in a person's intellectual box is that of phonological confidence. If a person can speak the language well, without fear or shame, then they will more readily undertake the challenge of learning the more intricate details of the target language.
I am also currently a translator of documentary films for the Foundation of Sustainable Development and USF. I also currently work as a freelance medical interpreter for World Services.
I have also been a Varsity baseball coach for the last 2 seasons at International High School.
I look forward to meeting lots of new students and encouraging them to pursue a life-long mission of Spanish language mastery.
