My approach is generally similar to a standard classroom approach. I will outline the subject under discussion, and give a brief verbal introduction. After the introduction, we will work on illustrative examples. It is important to me that a students not simply memorize material, but gain a conceptual grasp that allows them to think through and around their subject.
I am very much convinced that the most necessary part of an education is the development of critical and analytical thinking skills. I do my best to develop these in my students, often in discussion-based considerations of the topics we're dealing with. I received my MA in English from the University of Rochester, and studied creative writing at both the undergrad and graduate level. I'm very familiar with 19th and 20th century American Lit, but can teach on almost any subject under the broad category "English."
