My strategy is to find a student's learning edge and then to engage him or her along that edge. I strongly believe that whatever the subject or task a personal voice is essential to learning, so I encourage participation in as full a sense as possible. Then, I work with a student to organize their voice in ways that communicate effectively.
I aim for: knowledge, experience, and skill within specific subject areas; skill in applying one's learning across disciplines; and respect and curiosity for one's own learning edge and experience.
For nearly ten years, I have been teaching across the elementary and middle school curriculum -- especially in English, Math, History and Social Studies, and Science. I have also taught high school students including in a residential school/group home. I am also an actor and have worked as an acting and voice coach in Shakespeare programs, both with adults in a professional Shakespeare conservatory and with elementary age children in a summer camp.
I earned a B.A in Humanities from Colgate University, designing my own program in philosophy, literature, and religion. This included writing and defending a thesis for cross-disciplinary work.
