I am a 61 year-old Phi Beta Kappa with three degrees, now teaching students who are not keeping up with, or who want to get ahead of, the class. I boost academic confidence and role model my study skills, offering two different services each time -- homework help or my personalized educational plan with defined goals, which I update after each appointment. American History

In addition to preparing students for tests and helping them write papers, I share how I got my "A" in American History. This means outlining the reading assignments, taking good class notes, and putting them together before assignments come due.

Biology

I teach biology in a real-life fashion, which means that I emphasize projects rather than memorization. I lay a foundation for the possibility of a life sciences career such as medicine. Whether it is plants or animals, there is a lot to learn and apply to real life.

Grammar

As a scholar in language arts, I have a rare appreciation of good grammar that I pass along in order to boost my students' confidence as well as their grades/evaluations. One thing I use is my own writing guide.

European History

I had a 4.0 GPA in college, which included the European History course. I wrote an honors thesis on how the various European cultures were impacted by their changing political climate and government type over time.

Prealgebra

I provide a "balanced equation" for middle school success, by helping my students learn the concepts, skills, and reasoning strategies in the California Standards. Each time, their parents have the choice of homework help or my own individualized educational plan which is updated after each tutoring.

Reading

I teach children to read using consonant and vowel matching, writing using phonetic spelling, and forming letters correctly. In grade two, I begin using strategies such as context clues to increase vocabularies and overall comprehension. In grade five, students begin using reading more as a way to obtain information and learn about the values, attitudes, and insights of others. By high school, reading also includes analysis.

Writing

My tutoring provides a strong foundation of grammar. Also, because there is little out there in the way of good teaching material for writing, I have my own topics and checklists for the four types, which are description, narration, exposition and persuasion. I start the lesson with the student outlining what will be written.

English

English is my favorite subject to teach, probably because it focuses on real-world skills, less on memorizing. I always write personalized lesson plans, each one having more analysis and writing than multiple choice.

Government & Politics

I majored in Political Science in college, which is where I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Then I went on to Law School, which is largely about government, which is where I graduated with Honors.

Literature

In addition to preparing students for exams and helping them write papers, I share how I got my A in literature. This means reading the reviews, taking good class notes at the lectures, outlining before writing anything, and using my checklist when it comes to book reports.

Proofreading

I use professional proofreading symbols in reviewing and commenting on my students' writing. Because it occupies the last stage of production before the student turns in the work product, I make my review consistently accurate. As part of the process, I teach my students the proofreading symbols for their own use.

Law

I graded California Bar exam essays, graduated with honors in law, and, for 35 years, have been licensed to practice. In addition to, of course, answering questions about the material that baffle the student, I show how to (a) take class notes effectively when the teacher is employing the Socratic method, and b)practice treating an essay question as a problem to be solved cogently, yet simply.

SAT Writing

I teach all types of SAT essays. I start every lesson plan with the student outlining what he or she will write. Then, once the student has drafted the essay itself, I review it, which bolsters his or her grammar and vocabulary skills in the process.

Spelling

In teaching elementary school students, I use the spelling "bee" method. However, I do combine it with reading activities. The more advanced the grade level, the more I use the method of proofreading one's own writing for spelling errors.

Elementary Math

I give students a California standards-based curriculum with both multiple choice and word problem practice. We start with where the teacher is, but if there is ever no homework or test ahead, I have my own personalized lesson plans that I update after each tutoring.

Elementary Science

I give students a California Standards-based curriculum. Usually, the tutoring consists of helping with homework or projects, or preparing the student for a test. If there ever is none, I have my own personalized lesson plans that I update after every tutoring.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught elementary (K-6) students for six years. I am an honor student and enjoy building up children's academic confidence through my patience and persistence. I am writing an article on my tutoring methods for publication in parent magazines.

Phonics

I have been tutoring in this subject since 2009 and do so with the love and logic appropriate for kindergarten kids and first graders. My method is to use a clearly defined sequence of letter-sound relationships. My goal is for them to develop the joy of reading that underlay my straight "A's."

Study Skills

I graduated summa cum laude in my bachelor arts major of social studies/political science.

Public Speaking

I have been a licensed attorney for 30 years, spending a great deal of my time making arguments before juries and doing presentations at continuing education or corporate meetings.

ISEE

For three years I have been preparing fifth graders to successfully take this test for admission to independent middle schools.

Social Studies

I graduated summa cum laude in my bachelor of arts, majoring in social studies.
