I worked as a substitute teacher in the Chicago Public School District from 1999-2002 Upon substituting on a regular basis at The Young Women's Leadership Charter School of Chicago,(the second all girls public charter school in the nation) I was hired as a full-time staff member teaching Math, English, Leadership and Physical Education to middle school and high school students.
I moved to San Francisco in 2002 and worked for the organization, Making Waves, as a "Wave Leader" for "at-risk" children in 5th and 6th grade. I managed several tutors and oversaw the general aspects of the program. I tutored kids individually and taught group classes in Math and Reading. I graded most of the writing assignments and also helped to develop their Reading curriculum.
I was hired as an independent contractor at a tutoring agency in 2004 which trained me in SAT Preparation. I then taught SAT Preparation for individuals as well as group classes. I also tutored in all general academic subjects.
Since the end of 2006, I became self-employed tutoring 7th-12th grade in Algebra, Geometry, English, SSAT, and SAT. I have great references and have received most of my work on a "word-of-mouth" basis. I work with a diverse group of students with different learning styles. My goal is for my students to reach their full academic potential while understanding and utilizing their own individual learning style.
Approach:
My tutoring approach is based on the individual student. I assess where the problem areas are and try to get to the root of those areas so the student can gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the material. It's extremely important that I listen to the student's needs and work with those accordingly. In turn, I utilize strong communication, provide tools that will help students study on their own and find creative ways to have fun while learning.
Good tutor?
I am a good tutor because I can relate to a diverse population as well as diverse learning styles. I have a keen sense in understanding the student's perspective. I can explore multiple ways in teaching so that the student will have ownership of the information itself and be inspired to learn. My sessions are rich and make learning enjoyable, even in subjects that are quite challenging to the student.
Personal Statement:
My goal is for each one of my students to reach their full academic potential while understanding and utilizing their own individual learning style. I believe that learning can be fun and inspired and I do my absolute best in reaching that level with each student.

Emily has been an amazing resource for our family! She has been tutoring our kids in math since they were in 7th grade. They are now sophomores in high school and still using her as a resource. Adapting to their individual learning styles, Emily has consistently improved their grades, as well as their self-confidence about learning math. They both “love” working with her – their exact word! And, as teens, that is a rare compliment of an adult! We highly recommend Emily to help tutor your child – doing so, not only helps your child with math, but allows for family harmony – parents as tutors are a bad chemistry!

Emily has tutored all four of our children over the past 7 years. I would consider no other. Her methods, regardless the subject, thoroughly engage the children - they look forward to her visits and enjoy the learning process - making the retention rate that much higher. Emily's pedagogical skill set is extensive & flexible, allowing her to assess & tailor her approach to the learning style of her students. She is very conscientious in doing everything she can to get that child on track and grasping the nuts and bolts to nuances of a given subject. Not only have we seen sustained academic improvement in our kids under her guidance, the children's class teachers have been much impressed with the results.
