I was the first in my family to go to high school and was always able to find help from teachers, I find great joy in passing on that experience by working with students in grades 5 through 10. I'm comfortable providing help in math, language arts, and the social sciences. I'm a retired teacher with a California teaching credential, and I've been tutoring since July of 1997. Since then, I have coached the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests a number of times, and helped applicants write authentic application essays. My former students have all been accepted at a college of their choice, and a number of them stay in touch with me.

CBEST

I have coached several aspiring teachers to success on the CBEST exam that the State of California requires for credentials. The material itself is not difficult, but people whose early education happened in other countries often don't know what to expect. My own years of teaching in Latin America help me make the test clearer to others.

Dyslexia

I do understand what dyslexia does to confuse students, parents, and teachers. As soon as it is properly diagnosed, it is quite possible to coach the student to overcome its challenges: with the two high school students I've helped prepare for college, we used the accommodations now widely available. Those include petitioning for extra testing time, use of a spell-checker, use of a tape recorder, and whatever computer helps the college admissions office is willing to accept.

This test, for eighth graders wishing to enter competitive private high schools, is not particularly challenging for students who are already doing well in school. It does follow a highly structured sequence of parts, and it is important for the student to understand exactly what it's looking for in each section.
