I hold a BA in music, which required a great deal of study in musical composition, theory and analysis and history. I am finishing an MFA in musical performance and pedagogy. I've been a professional musician all my adult life, and teach at the high school and university level. I enjoy teaching, and would love to help you no matter you age or level of experience.
Ear training (often called "aural skills) is one of several foundational skills required of musicians and singers of all types. In ear training, we learn to listen to forms, intervals and patterns, and the relationship to what is written. As a university music teacher, I am qualified to teach all levels and ages in this subject, and many tricks and games to make this experience fun and practical.
I've been teaching & tutoring kids and adults for twenty-five years. I am skilled in both remedial and advanced learning, and really good at helping kids get organized and be more productive. I am earning a Master's degree in pedagogy, which is a fancy word for the science of learning; the different ways in which we learn, called "modalities."
Sometimes we find ourselves challenged by a subject because we don't know how to learn. It most often takes a combination of two modalities learn something new. For example, I know I learn best when I combine visual, auditory and tactile modalities. If I attend a lecture, but don't take notes, I don't recall as much because the action of writing reinforces what I hear.
About the middle of elementary school, kids start to need an understanding of how they best learn. If they don't, they get frustrated, discouraged and sometimes shut down. Let me help your kid enjoy learning!
I have an MFA in music and am qualified to teach all music-related subjects. I have over 20 years of teaching private lessons, as well as experience in elementary, secondary and university level coursework.
Most students come to my home studio in the Cow Hollow neighborhood of San Francisco. I teach from a church on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in Belmont.
I love my work. Music keeps us happy and healthy!
Teaching music history is fun for me. I teach at middle school, high school and university levels. I use different materials, media and techniques for making learning exciting.
Musicians of all types, as well as general education students, are required to understand the music they play in historical context. Music History further teaches us the political and social context in which music was composed and performed, and the "performance practice" or stylistic traditions of different historical periods (Early-Baroque, Common Practice [aka"Classical"] Romantic & Modern.
As a professional singer, teacher & stage director, I have years of experience helping people improve their public speaking skills. I can help you relax and build your confidence!
Public Speaking is a necessary skill to most professions, and is not taught in schools as a regular part of the curriculum as in past generations. This subject contains a variety of skills which can be taught to anyone. Skills such as how to use the voice both with and without a mic, how to connect to your audience, how to pace an address or speech, diction and accent correction.
I've tutored K-12 students in several subjects, including reading and related language arts.
I started sewing lessons when I was 12. Now, with teenagers, I continue to sew, picking up special projects in theatre and opera costuming, as well as household projects such as curtains, table linens and repairs.
I was one of those moms who always sewed her kids Halloween costumes! I enjoy sewing.
My primary occupation is as a music teacher. Good teaching requires similar qualities and experience no matter what the subject.
Let me help you learn to sew or improve your skills.
I've been a singer all my life. Many years ago, as a first year college student, I remember feeling terrified when I began sight-singing classes. But I got better at it, and now it's just part of my day as a professional singer.
Sight Singing (also known as sight reading)is one or a skill set required of musicians and singers, and can be special challenge to those who play instruments. Sight Singing requires the ability to mentally process music on a page, and be able to produce the correct corresponding notes with the voice. This is not about big singing! It can be a hum,or a"la la la," but what counts is accuracy. Do I really know by sight, the difference between an augmented 4th and a perfect 5th?
Study Skills don't come naturally to many of us. But these skills can be learned, especially when guided by an experienced teacher. I teach graduate level pedagogy, that is, the study and practice of learning. I am also the mom of a kid who had challenges in the areas of executive functioning, auditory processing and the anxiety which comes from struggling. Because of his experiences, I've learned even more about learning.
I am patient and calm, and know some excellent tricks for organizing students to create more effect learning.
I have performed before live audiences all my life as an actor and singer. Being on a stage with an audience of hundreds of people or in an intimate house, is perhaps the most enjoyable activity I experience. The stage is home to me. I am good at my work!

Teaching singers is rewarding, and a pleasure for me. Although singing is fun, it requires hard work and dedication to make progress. It requires a patient teacher because the art of singing is so very personal-a good teacher will help you build confidence and help you grow and have fun, too.
