My name is Ciani Sparks. I am a 23 year old female graduate student at San Diego State University. I am studying Biostatistics and hope to obtain a job in the biotechnology industry by the time I graduate in 2015. I received my undergraduate degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for Mathematics and Biotechnology. I started tutoring middle school kids when I was 16 years old in different math and science classes. I have always loved working with children to improve their knowledge and comprehension. Although being a teacher never really appealed to me, I still enjoy working with kids, especially one on one. I have tutored multiple subjects including: algebra, precalculus, geometry, basic statistics, and elementary school subjects.
This past June I traveled to South Africa to volunteer in a school with less fortunate children. I was volunteering with a program called One Heart Source, and for a month I worked with 3rd and 4th grade students on their English and math skills. Some students knew had to read while other students did not even know the alphabet. This was a huge challenge for me because I had to figure out how to connect with all the children in such a short amount of time. I learned a lot about teaching and how to work with children at different skill levels and ages. I had an amazing time and it really made me appreciate the education I received when I was a child. Now that I am back in school and have some free time, I would like to continue to help children with their education because I think it is one of the most valuable opportunities our society has.
