Ni Hao, potential students!
If you have seen my photo, then you can guess that I am not a native speaker of Mandarin. In fact, I am from Chicago, but have studied, lived in, led trips around, and been completely immersed in China and Chinese language since 1998, when I was offered the opportunity to move to China as part of an experiment in study abroad at my small, New England College that I was attending (and graduated from in 1999). I'd started studying Mandarin in 1996 at Amherst College, and quickly discovered this was a language and culture I could get excited about!
Since 1996, I have spent about 7 years in China, and about 13 years teaching Chinese language and culture. I'll just give you some highlights here.
I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine for 1 year at a clinic in Hefei, Anhui Province in a total immersion environment- a great way to learn Medical Chinese! I led study abroad trips for a small study abroad company for about 4 years throughout China- a great way to see the country and learn about cultural differences and accents throughout the country. After that, I was director of the CET - Middlebury College School in China until 2011 when I decided to move back to the states. During my time in America, I have taught Chinese- 3 years at the High School level, 2 years at colleges/ universities (including UCSD), and at the Middle school level too. I have had my California Teaching Credential in Mandarin Language since 2008.
I re-located to San Diego last year, and am looking to take on a few more students. Please contact me if you are a serious language learner or know someone who needs help mastering this challenging, but rewarding language. I can help!
I am also currently teaching ESL at SDSU, and am accepting 1-2 more students who want to improve their English, especially if you are a native Mandarin speaker.
