I have a Masters in Counseling and I am a certified Life Coach. I'm presently retired after 35 years working in the Federal Government. I enjoy helping others, socializing and volunteering in the community. I enjoy helping children (ages 5 and up - and adults) to read and comprehend what they are reading. I have been a youth leader in my church and presently a mentor to a eleven year old girl. I presently volunteer at a convalescent home, reading to them and lead them in singing songs that brings smiles to their faces. This truly touches me to see them smile!
My tutoring style is not to provide answers but to help in solving reading/comprehension problems. I try to
discover the challenges and strengths of the learner as well s the weaknesses. Once strengths and weaknesses are identified, I will have a better idea of what to expect and what to focus on with the learner.
I will clearly establish expectations for the learner and of myself.
I recognize everyone has different learning styles and I try to identify the style to assist me in tutoring. I try to build trust, be open and honest. Never use sarcasm or put downs to produce results. I use questions and sounding out words to help in solving reading problems. I give positive feedback to reinforce efforts and accomplishments.
I will admit if there isn't going to be the chemistry needed to continue or if my tutoring isn't helping. I do not give up easily and will work hard for success but will be realistic if my efforts are not producing the outcome expected. Not afraid to admit if I don't know something and will be willing to refer student to another source if it will help.
I believe in celebrating the accomplishment with a certificate and a cupcake (smile).
Looking forward to getting involved and hope to make a difference in someone's life.
