Hello! I am a former management consultant who has been "downsized" and is looking for new challenges. I've applied my skill at reading, writing, mathematics, and Microsoft Office in solving real-world problems and communicating those solutions for 14 years.

I've read widely in science as a personal hobby; I studied geology in college because you end up having to know something of every other field of science to understand what's happening in geology.

Part of my methodology is to "begin with the end in mind," to quote Stephen Covey's 2nd Habit. Understanding the intended outcome is necessary to develop a plan of action and specific milestones within that plan. Understanding where the student is now is important for measuring success.

Another part of my methodology is to focus on understanding processes. In mathematics & in writing, process is everything. I've heard people say "Trust the process." Fine; but you have to know the process and train yourself to apply it consistently.

Algebra 1

I've studied math up through 1st semester calculus and statistics. I've also tutored my daughter in math throughout her elementary & high school career (personal record: I successfully explained logarithms in just two minutes). I've had a love for American history since I was a young boy, and I've studied American history both formally and informally for almost my entire life. My goal is to make American history more accessible by showing how people and events interacted with each other. Geography

Geography is a long-standing interest of mine, as it frequently is the handmaiden of history, another of my passions. I have studied physical and cultural geography both in college and in my own reading. My tutoring, like most geography instruction in the schools today, seeks to show how topography, hydrography, climate, and people combine to shape the world around us.

Government & Politics

I've studied American government and politics as an outgrowth of my interest in American history and as a result of working as a defense contractor. American politics and government involves the interaction of personalities, ideas, and processes. I approach the study & teaching of American politics & government from a "real-world" view of how decisions get made (or avoided).

HTML

Let's face it: HTML can be a pain in the neck. It requires both knowledge of the tags and attention to detail in applying them, especially now with the XHTML requirement that all markup be well-formed. I've used HTML since the days when Netscape was the cool and spiffy browser, I've made just about every dumb mistake one can make, and I've learned from them. Let me share my experience and knowledge with you.

Microsoft Access

I am a former management consultant and have used Microsoft Access for over a decade as a configuration management tool. Making the best use of Access is less about knowing the ins and outs of the software commands and more about how to design a database that is both logical and extensible. Careful planning of your database will make your job--or the job of those who come after you--much easier.

Microsoft Outlook

I used Microsoft Outlook from 1999 to 2011 in a professional environment. My experience includes administering team calendars, team task lists and task delegation, and managing a client's calendar and tasks as their delegate. I can tutor students on basic Outlook usage (setting up an account and using Outlook's email, task list, and personal calendar functions), administration of PST files, email and personal information security, and using Outlook as a collaboration tool.

Microsoft Windows

I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). I have set up, configured, deployed, and repaired Windows computers in professional and personal computing environments. I have also performed disaster recovery. I can teach you how to get the most out of your computer; I can also assist you as you set up and secure your machine.

Fitness

I am a former Marine Corps NCO; part of my duties involved supervising physical training within my unit. (Relax; I don't do the berserk drill instructor schtick.) I am in good physical condition, but still working on improving myself; I will not ask you to do anything I haven't done first, and I will always remember that the object is to train, not to strain. I will work out with you.

Microsoft Project

I have used Microsoft Project for 14 years. I've managed a variety of projects ranging from a minor software rewrite, to manufacture & delivery of customized aircraft maintenance stands, to a large data center relocation effort. I have used it to track resource utilization, develop Cost & Schedule Performance Indices, and deliver Earned Value Management to my clients.
