Hello everyone!
My name is Sheila, and I am currently working a full time position as a scientist in San Diego. I have a very long history of teaching and tutoring. My experience in teaching began in high school, where I tutored my peers in writing and taught young students religion classes.
In college, I was a teaching assistant and mentor for an AP Biology class and also taught through the Upward Bound Math and Science program. It was in college that I really learned of my love of teaching and science! My college degree was in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology. I loved science so much that I decided to go to graduate school so that I could become a Biology Professor. In graduate school, I was also a teaching assistant in Human Biochemistry. I had a great relationship with my students (I still keep in contact with many of them!) and really enjoy teaching! I ended up receiving my Ph.D in Biochemistry in 2009.
Last year I had the opportunity to become a part-time professor to teach a year of General Biology for San Diego Miramar College. I did such a great job that I have been asked by another college, San Diego City College, to teach the class this Winter, but had to decline due to time conflicts with my current job. Instead, I would love the ability to tutor students in the evenings and weekends to help you succeed.
My general approach to teaching is to first convey the “Big Picture” to my students in order to lay a basic foundation where I can then communicate more detailed information. I strive to create a learning atmosphere that is engaging, enjoyable, and thought-provoking. I encourage students to think thoroughly and critically, especially to come up with their own conclusions. Through this process, students come to understand and appreciate the ways in which scientific facts are constructed. I also am sure to stress to them that the sciences are very dynamic, constantly being revised and updated with new discoveries.
I am best at one-on-one interaction or small groups in terms of tutoring and teaching. It is also very important that I help build a student's confidence and make it a comfortable environment for them to ask me questions. I am incredibly approachable and have your best interests in mind always. I will give you my 100 percent effort and will encourage you to do the same!
If I sound like a good fit for you, please contact me. I would love to help you improve your grades and impart my passion for learning!
