Teaching for me has always been a calling. Even after many years of teaching in the elementary grades, I look forward to challenges that lead to success. If something doesn't work, I try something else. Each student is unique, with his or her own needs and abilities. I gear my instruction to those. I also try to challenge them, when necessary.
My philosophy in teaching is to tap into curiosity and inquiry that students potentially have and should continue to be developed. Children love to learn when teachers love to teach and imbue students with the excitement of discovery. We should continue to stimulate this. Creative imagination can't be exhausted. I like to use an eclectic approach where I combine all methods. For instance, reading is a combination of pictures, sight vocabulary, phonics, and use of content.
As a tutor, I would ask child what he enjoys at school and difficulties encountered, and base my lessons on that. I would encourage questions and if the student doesn't understand, I would try another approach. A student should feel confident that I"m there to help him and will use whatever method necessary for student's success.
In New York, I taught mostly 4th-6th grades at all levels, including gifted. In San Diego, I taught K-9th grades in mostly bilingual classes. I look forward to tutoring. Even though my experience has been mostly in the classroom, I used to tutor students who needed extra help,before or after school.
