Hi, my name is Ruby and I am in my mid 20's. I have a degree in Psychology from University of California, San Diego. I was an honor student in college, high school and I was in the top 10% of my high school graduating class. I attended AP and honors classes, and I was always praised for being a hard working student as far back as elementary school. I was not always good at English writing, comprehension and vocabulary but with work and determination, I improved. I was required to take a remedial writing class during my first quarter at UCSD and I was given three chances to pass the class and the exam or else I would have had to no longer attend the school. Luckily for me, after all the hard work, I was able to pass both the class and the exam after only the first quarter. Although I did well in school, there were times where I struggled, which is why I am patient and can sympathize with students looking for some help.
I was first introduced to tutoring during my senior year of high school. I had one free class period two times a week where I spent helping my former chemistry teacher as a teacher aid. I assisted with grading and answering students' questions. These students were sophomores and were taking chemistry for the first time. I walked around the classroom asking students if they had any questions about their assignments and helped them understand the material. This was not a paid tutoring job but this was when I realized that I like to tutor.
I understand sometimes students are not motivated to learn or feel discouraged but I try to make the experience as fun and stress free as possible. I try to engage the students during tutoring sessions, not just give students answers, but help them understand the mental process or steps to get to the answers. I can help students cope with testing anxiety since I had to deal with it myself. I felt a lot of anxiety taking English comprehension and writing exams especially.
I love math subjects such as Pre Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Probability, Trigonometry and Statistics. Math is my strongest subject and it always seemed easy for me to get A's on my tests and quizzes. I am great at explaining the steps needed and have great techniques to help remember how to solve problems. I love to help students feel more comfortable with the subject.
