I've been teaching for quite a long time but haven't lost my passion for it!

Since starting as an elementary school teacher 26 years ago, in more recent years I have worked almost exclusively with people who are learning English as an additional language. I have taught English Learners in elementary, middle and high schools. I have taught and tutored adolescents and adults in private language schools, including Business English, and have served as an Advisory Teacher while living in England. As a volunteer, I have provided homework help and literacy support to children whose families have come to the U.S. as refugees.

Currently, I am teaching a part-time Citizenship class for adults who are preparing for U.S. citizenship. My students tell me that I speak clearly and explain content in ways they can understand. I combine sensitivity, humor and my educator's "bag of tricks" to give them confidence to learn what they need to know in order to pass the citizenship test, a difficult challenge for my older students. But we try to have a good time while learning, and my students are successful in their desire to become citizens!

On the personal front, I am married with two grown daughters, both of whom live in San Diego. My very old cat spends a lot of time sleeping, but I'm happy that she's still with us. I enjoy hiking, cycling, camping, traveling, cooking, and reading.

Grammar

ESL/ESOL

I have a Multiple Subject Credential and a Language Development Specialist Certificate from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. I have a Master's Degree in Education/English Language Teaching, as well as the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). I have taught ESL and EFL to children, young adults and older adults for 20 years.

Proofreading

My long teaching career has included working with students of many ages and varied levels of English acquisition. I have taught writing in high school and adult ESL classes, and enjoy working 1:1 with students on improving the editing and revision of their writing. I have an eye for written errors; I guess I'm a bit of a "detail person"! I like to ask a writer the kinds of questions that help identify weaknesses in writing, as well as potential improvements.

Spelling

I help students to identify and learn high frequency words that often do not follow phonemic rules. For words that can more easily be "sounded out," I help students understand how word parts can be put together in written form. With younger children, I like to use spelling games for practice and reinforcement of words being learned.

Elementary Math

I have taught elementary math as a classroom teacher in grades 2-5. I have also taught pre-algebra skills normally taught in grades 5-8. I focus on visuals and use of manipulatives to build math concepts. I also draw attention to the language of math, not only in word problems, but also as a building block for understanding math operations.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a California Multiple Subject Credential, and have been a classroom teacher for grades 2-6. While living in England, I was an Advisory/Support teacher for children in grades K-6. As an elementary teacher I have developed integrated topics, with an emphasis on language and literacy across the curriculum.

Phonics
