Experienced Teacher in Multiple Subjects and ESL

Teaching has always been my passion. I have been teaching for twenty years and have experience guiding students aged preschool to adult in the learning process.

In the beginning of my career, I taught children for five years in a Pre Kindergarten class. After that, I worked for three years as a literacy support teacher in a local elementary school, teaching children aged Kindergarten to fifth grade in reading strategies, reading comprehension, test taking strategies, math, writing, and language arts. I was then hired by the local adult school and have taught ESL to English language learners for eleven years. Currently, I work with special needs students, English learners, and elementary aged students with reading, writing, and math skills. My teaching credential allows me to work with multiple subjects, including English as a second language (ESL) and special education.

Vocabulary

Increase vocabulary through using inference skills, context clues, with in word patterns,syllables and affixes, and derivational relations

Grammar

Learn how to identify and use parts of speech, punctuate for meaning, understand paragraphing, use adjective and noun clauses, express present, past, and future tense, connect ideas

Reading

Develop literacy and reading comprehension through tools such as making connections, questioning, using inferencing, determining importance, creating mental pictures (visualization), understanding text structure, de-coding and phonemic awareness

Spanish

Learn or increase Spanish language acquisition through vocabulary, sentence structure, verb conjugation, conversation, pronunciation, reading fluency, and writing practice. Interactive games, songs, and plays used for younger students. Spanish literature utilized to enhance literacy development.

Writing

My experiences with teaching writing are well-rounded. I have helped students with expository, persuasive, and narrative essays. Many of my students have benefited with guidance in sentence and paragraph structure, along with descriptive writing assistance. I also walk my students through the process of organizing in preparation of writing.

English

Become familiar with different genre such as biographies, poetry, non-fiction, and short stories. Use proper parts of speech and grammar. Improve writing short response or essays. Learn to use comprehension strategies to help with reading fluency.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Professional Clear Multiple Subject teaching credential through the state of California. Phonics

I am currently certified with a Multiple Subject teaching credential and have worked as a literacy support teacher in an elementary school for three years. The phonetic concepts that I help students to develop are letter name alphabetic spelling, within word patterns, syllables and affixes, and derivational relations. The practices that I use to teach phonics are through a word study approach, such as using letter symbols to letter sound associations, word and concept sorts, and rhyming.

Study Skills

I currently have a Multiple Subject teaching credential and have taught study skills to elementary school students. An example of the concepts covered in study skills are the use of graphic organizers, reading comprehension strategies (questioning, making connections, making inferences, and determining importance), creating visuals, creating a distraction free environment, and setting up a daily routine.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified to teach English to learners of other languages with the CLAD emphasis on my Multiple Subject teaching credential. I have taught English language learners for ten years now. My experience includes working with students of all ages (preschool to adult).
