I am a highly skilled and dynamic English teacher with a private practice. I work with students to improve their writing skills, enabling them to succeed in their current and future English classes, honors or regular. I also specialize in preparing students for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, AP Composition, AP Literature, and ISEE (private school entrance exam). For seniors in high school, I provide comprehensive college application preparations, with expertise in the University of California and Common Applications (private school applications).
As a reading specialist, I can easily diagnose and remediate difficulties with language while working with adults, college students, and English Language Learners. Furthermore, my experience as a reading specialist means I can teach the strategies necessary to crack the code for critical reading and test prep. I also work with thesis and dissertation candidates.
With over thirty years of experience, I have been head of two English departments, am thoroughly familiar with broad literature and writing models, CA Standards and Common Core. There is not any assignment in English, humanities, or writing that I cannot do. Presently I enjoy working with and motivating students to enjoy their academic work. I also teach college level students and courses online in English and in education.
Here is the bottom line: I can raise your student's test scores. I not only do remediation but also acceleration to give students a head start in the curriculum. I know what is expected of the students and I can deliver. All of my students do very well on the SAT, ACT, and PSAT. They receive fives on the AP Composition and AP Literature tests as well as A’s in their English classes.
I gain students' trust quickly and work efficiently. I don't waste time, yours or mine. Once I incorporate a student into my tutoring practice, I am just an email away if help is needed.
For every student I tutor, I design a specialized program tailored directly to their academic success. My students are generally with me for years as I design a long-term plan for college success while ensuring success in current English classes and standardized testing. Even though I personalize students’ programs, here is a general idea of what I can offer:
If Your Student Is In High School: NEW SAT IS HERE
Although the changes will eliminate a lot of old fashioned vocabulary such as that of Jane Austen, the material will be even more challenging. Students who are in grade nine now will have the new book.
The writing is optional but necessary for applicants to academically challenging universities and colleges. It will be very similar to the kind of writing that I teach for AP Composition and AP Literature. It will require preparation and practice as will the critical reading. The format is a little different than the previous SAT . Overall, I would say it will be more challenging.
The ACT is not changing.
Grade 9/10: work with assigned literature and writing of school and research papers, build strong vocabulary foundation, teach expository writing and critical reading skills, literary analysis, enrichment in classic and modern literature, prepare for future success in AP English classes, prepare for standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, ACT)
Grade 11: work with assigned literature and writing of school and research papers, build more advanced vocabulary, improve upon expository writing and critical reading skills, hone literary analysis skills, work with AP English and Humanities assignments, prepare for the SAT and/or ACT, begin college counseling and start college application essays in June before senior year
Grade 12: complete college essays for the University of California system, write Common Application personal statement (private universities) and supplementary essays for all applications, oversee college process and selection, complete scholarship applications, work with AP English assignments
If Your Student Is In Middle School:
Grade 7/8: work with assigned literature and writing of school and research papers, build strong vocabulary foundation, design personal program for enrichment in literature and expository writing to practice writing skills and literary analysis, introduce students to classic and modern literature, begin PSAT preparation

Grade 5/6: Assess reading and writing skills to design a personal program to enhance writing, literature, and critical thinking and analysis skills, teach reading comprehension, build strong vocabulary foundation, prepare students for advanced literature and English classes
