As a background, I am an effective, caring and dedicated credentialed teacher of the Classics-having taught both Ancient Greek and Latin during my 5 years of traditional classroom teaching.
Presently I teach high school Latin for the 1st and 2nd years of study. I work for a credentialed distance learning institution which means I get to reach students all across the country most of whom would not have the opportunity to study this language otherwise. Teaching in the virtual world fits with my personal philosophy that Latin is for everyone and it’s up to the teacher to open that world to the students.
I consider it an honor to educate students in the history, culture, grammar and the critical thinking skills one gains in the process of studying Latin.
I have always set high standards for my students adhering to the goals at hand while infusing the best practices related to the teaching and learning of the Latin language as adopted by ACTFL (the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and the American Classics League. I am an active member of both of these organizations and attend events sponsored by each.
I adhere to the core teaching philosophy that all young people can achieve academic excellence if they are provided rigorous instruction, high standards, informed guidance, and individual attention. My most cherished letters of recommendation are those from students in the form of thank you letters and follow up emails.
I am a trained Classicist having begun my studies of Latin in the late 80's when I was high school sophomore. I continued my love of languages majoring in Classics with a Latin emphasis at UC Irvine, next obtaining a second degree in Classical civilization, and then obtaining my single subject teaching credential at San Diego State University.
Finally I have firsthand knowledge of the Classical world having spent 2 1/2 years living in Athens, Greece while studying at the American College of Greece. More recently I have spent extensive time studying Italian in and out of Italy, the country which my husband and my son are citizens of. My firsthand familiarity of these countries helps me bring to life the study of Latin. Moreover my own efforts to master Italian keeps me up to date with the joys and pitfalls while learning a second language.
I am available to tutor (and teach independent students)the subjects of Latin, Ancient Greek and to help students of Italian with their studies within a 15 minute driving distance from the zip code 92121. Tutoring in other areas outside will include driving time.
I also teach an enrichment class with highly gifted students one a week. Local references are available upon request.
My professional, academic, parent and student references are available on request. As my teaching credential is registered with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing I already have a CA state certificate of clearance which includes a complete background check. Proof of this is available if requested as well.
