Pragmatic teacher/mentor with sense of humor will explain accounting and finance subjects in "plain English." I do not preach rote memorization or complex formulas, unless the subject requires it; but rather how these things work in the real world. With over 35 years experience, I have literally done everything in accounting and finance; involved in mergers and acquisitions, two IPO's, sales of assets, winding businesses down, tripling revenue growth in one year; you name it, I've done it. My recent projects have involved early-stage start-ups, setting up legal entities, developing accounting systems, capitalization tables, fund-raising, stock options, etc.
Accounting seemed so hard long ago, but now it is more natural to me. My experience and dealing with large companies that are great training grounds for new people to learn the "right" way through time-tested, documented policies and procedures.
As you move forward in your career, chances are you will be moving into smaller companies where you have more impact through a larger scope of responsibility, but most likely lacking in documented policies and procedures. Unless prior companies specifically forbid copying the policies, I'd make sure I make copies and keep them filed for your reference in the future.
