I am an experienced educator with over 30 years of experience teaching at all levels, from Kindergarten to College. I have worked with students in all subjects, including science, social studies and math. I taught the GED in Spanish and tutored writing while doing my doctoral studies. My speciality is Bilingual Education, Language Arts and Foreign Languages, including ESL. I focus on writing as well, and have helped writers in the editing and proofreading of their manuscripts. I have lived and traveled in Europe and Africa and have passed all the major tests for teaching, from the CBEST to the MCAT. I especially enjoy working with students who have not had success in the traditional classroom setting. Grammar

I have studied a number of languages, as well as English as my first language. I have taught most of these languages and have a number of techniques and strategies for learning and teaching grammar. Each student learns grammar differently, so I use a variety of materials. These include games like Mad Libs and color-coded cards to cloze sentences and writing activities. I always try to make lessons fun and interesting as well.

I "grew up" with MS office as I did college and office work over the past three decades. I have done a variety of work in Word, from letters, to newsletters to flyers and other documents. Reading

As an experienced primary school teacher, I have worked with many students on reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency. I understand the many issues regarding literacy, from phonics and phonemics to main idea, from whole language to decoding and inference. Making meaning from those squiggly lines on paper (or, increasingly, on the computer screen) can be made easier with some techniques and strategies I've used with my students from K to College.

Spanish

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish and over a decade of experience teaching Spanish in bilingual settings. I have written reading and writing tests for a major local publisher. I lived in Spain and studied Spanish there, in a Spanish university. I have a variety of techniques and materials that make learning the language fun and vivid.

GED

For many years I taught students at a local adult school who were planning on taking the GED. Most needed help with the math portion, but we also worked on the other subjects, especially the reading and writing portions. I have worked with adults at community college level as well, and try to make both the subject and the test as interesting, fun and realistic as possible!

ACT English

I have taught English for over 30 years and have taken a number of college level and teaching exams over the years as well.

I've also written tests for many years now, so I know how to approach them. I received high scores on all of the exams that I've taken (including the ACT) and have always been successful with the students whom I've helped prepare for exams.

Elementary Math

I have 20 years experience teaching from K to college. When I taught math to elementary and middle school students, I used hands on techniques that focused on manipulatives, strategies and techniques that helped students to visualize and understand the concepts behind what they were learning. Focusing on the learning style of the student, I was able to use visual, auditory and kinestheic (or tactile) methods to make math understandable and fun.

I taught Public Speaking at Hartnell College, Salinas, California, for four semesters during the 2009-10 and 2011-12 school years. I worked with 20-30 students each semester on the various aspect of planning, preparing and presenting five types of speeches: informative, persuasive, demonstrative, entertaining and impromptu. Students used PowerPoint, developed outlines and provided research citations when necessary.
