My name is Scott and I am an experienced tutor and educator that has been working in education for five years. I earned my undergraduate degree in education from Dominican University of California and I my master's degree in history from Sonoma State University. I have a teaching credential from Sacramento State University in History. I am a professionally trained reading tutor and I have been very successful helping kids with reading problems improve their skills. I was trained by Lindamood Bell Learning Processes and I successfully helped kids struggling with reading improve their reading scores by a whole grade level in just one summer. I have also tutored students in math, history and writing.
I have worked with kids of all ages. I was a teacher with an after school program in the Bay area, where I managed classes of twenty kids. When it comes time to tutor, I like to reinforce skills that are being introduced by the classroom teachers, but adjust instruction based on a student's ability level. When tutoring reading, I have highly effective methods I use to improve phonetic awareness and reading comprehension.
It is important for me as a tutor to work closely with students and parents to develop a plan that will best help students meet their academic goals. I encourage parent feedback and I am happy to offer homework help in addition to other skill-building methods I use.
I have worked with elementary aged students in various settings for five years. Most of my experience working with elementary students comes from my time working as an instructional assistant and after school program manager for the Blue Oak School in Napa, as well as the three after school programs I have worked for since 2006. I have other experience from being a substitute teacher where I frequently subbed for elementary classrooms.
