Algebra 1

I know there is always more than one way to solve math problems. I can work with students so they understand why the problem methodology works, often using other ways to solve it. Once you understand the reason something works, application to a particular set of details is relatively simple.

American History

American history is very interesting. One thing about history is that it is always linked to something else, such as politics, social situations, natural resources, and the like. Once you understand the big picture, the details can more easily fall into place.

Aspergers

I have had students with Aspergers. My son has autism.

Autism

My son has autism. I am trained in ABA through his therapy agency.

Biology

I have taught general and subject level biology since 1994. I also spent 6 years setting up and maintaining teaching laboratories at the university level. I have scored for the Golden State Exam and the CSET. I have contracted with several national publishers to contribute to general biology textbooks and ancillary materials.

Biostatistics

I have experience in biostatistics as related to my thesis (parametric and nonparametric data collection and analysis sampling statistics, ANOVA, regression, correlations, F-test) as well as having a course in Biological Statistics as part of my BS degree. The courses I teach in general biology and ecology require my ability to work with student groups and teach them statistical methods as related to the lab projects, but also their independent group project data collection and analysis as well.

Botany

I have taught organismal biology successfully for more than 15 years. Thesis research involved sugar pine site and growth characteristics.

CBEST

In 1998 I passed all three sections of CBEST on first attempt with a 190 total score. I also have experience with the CSET exam.

Chemistry

My BS degree carries a minor in chemistry. The general biology courses I teach also have a unit on chemistry. Chemistry plays a role in ecology and natural resources and I use chemistry in teaching everything from weather to pollution and waste management. Several of my student feedbacks are from chemistry students.

Chess

I won my school championship chess tournaments in both 7th and 8th grade. I can play both offensive and defensive manners, as well as show a beginner the logic of the plays and the ability to predict likely moves by the opponent.

COOP/HSPT

I have helped students significantly increase their scores and pass not only the HSPT, but also the California High School Exit exams. I have been a grader for the Golden State exams (pre-date exit exams, but give college credit to high school students), been a judge in the Science Olympiad and have taught Science for credential candidates. I am familiar with state standards at all primary and secondary levels.

Ecology

Ecology and natural resources is my focus. I have taught upper division ecology classes at the university level (both lecture and labs). I also have developed lab activities and have had to modify exercises "on the fly" when conditions change.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a son in elementary school who requires significant aid due to his autism. I am familiar with sequential training/teaching techniques such as 1:1, chaining (break down tasks into small sequential steps), positive reinforcement, ABA, and Saxon methods. I am able to introduce concepts in variety of ways to fit needs of an individual.

Elementary Math

Placed third in county math tournament back in the time, so have a good grasp of elementary math.

Elementary Science

One of the courses I teach is for Liberal Studies students, so I teach the teachers. I work with showing them how to demonstrate and break concepts into parts. Real life examples of how science works often makes more sense than an ethereal idea.

Genetics

I have taught classes with genetics portion since 1994.

Geometry

There are many rules to Geometry. However, once you know the reasons for the rules, they will make more sense. Once you can work with the rules, recognize there is usually more than one way to solve a problem.

Prealgebra

I took prealgebra in middle school and was a member of my school team in the Nevada County math tournament while in middle school. I placed third in the county in my last year. I have also prepped/tutored later school teams for the same. In my teaching, I have taught algebra and business math at Heald Business College.

Public Speaking

I have taught for more than 18 years. Standing in front of groups between 24 and over 200 students, one has to do presentations ranging from 3-4 minutes for a specific topic to a 2 hour lecture. Preparing lessons is very much like preparing a speech every day. In addition, I have done presentations for the Sacramento Public Library and been a liaison between college and elementary schools, doing science presentations for public school students. One of the classes I teach requires students to do presentations every semester, so I need to guide and assist them with their presentations as well as evaluate their final performances.

Special Needs

My son has autism and I interact with him everyday. While working for H&R Block, I was the office go-to person dealing with disabled clients and tax situations. The counselors who work with disabled students at the college I teach for direct students to my classes because they know I can work with the unique situations required.

Spelling

Spelling is more than memorizing the pattern of letters used to make words. I help you understand phonetic structure, patterns and systems. Twenty six letters and approximately fifty phonics make up our language, much easier than learning each individual word separately.

Study Skills

Studying is more than just reading the book and reviewing your notes. A student's learning modality and the pedagogy of the teacher should determine how best to study. I can help you (or your student) determine the best option. Is is an art, not a one-size fits all system. I have experience teaching in multiple modalities to students with wide-ranging skills and interests. It is not the same for every student, and each person needs to be helped in different ways. I can do this.

Tax Preparation

I spent 6 years as a tax professional, achieving Senior Tax Advisor V level (highest level possible short of becoming an Enrolled Agent) with H&R Block. I taught tax updates, recertification, and basic classes for H&R Block for 4 years.

World History

History is almost always linked to something else, such as politics, social situations, natural resources, and the like. Many triggers of World War II are related to social strife in part caused by lack of resources for the citizens. A big part of the reason societies fall is they become too large and the distribution of resources such as food become too complex to maintain. Once you understand the big picture, the details can more easily fall into place.

Zoology

I have taught organismal biology successfully for more than 15 years.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
