My teaching experience includes biology/ecology/natural resources at California State University Sacramento, American River and Folsom Lake Community Colleges since 1994 and have taught at Heald Business College. I have also contracted with publishers to review new and updates to textbooks, and written study guides and test banks for publishers since 2003. While my concentration is organism level biology, I routinely teach chemistry, cell biology, genetics, evolution, and anatomy/physiology units in my non-majors and introductory biology classes. My teaching schedule is scattered, but will make appointments around class schedule. I am in Roseville and teach in Sacramento, Folsom, and Placerville.
I view the role of a tutor more as a Nestor and to work myself out of an assignment. You should not be permanently connected to a tutor. A tutor should be there to help you through a topic or course, but to also give you the skills to be more self sufficient, teaching you what you need to be able to perform on your own.
My teaching philosophy is big picture: how does it all work together and how all the parts interact with each other. I found that making connections to familiar situations helps students comprehend and understand the material; For example, I explain the scientific method using an analogy about chocolate chip cookies. I do not do "canned" teaching. Materials are malleable and customized to student needs (either individual or class level). Familiar with multiple modalities of learning (VARK: visual, auditory, reading, kinesthetic). Have experience with students with special needs (especially autism spectrum).
Thank you for your consideration.
