I am a reading specialist and was certificated by the State of California. My most significant achievement was with a nine year old boy who went to school only briefly when he was five. He entered my 3rd grade class without knowing the alphabet. When he started to write his numbers and letters were often reversed. Later in the year, he took a district writing assesment without assistance and received one of the highest scores given.
I have a Certificate for Life that was given to me by the State of California. I've taught public school and tutored many years. I'm most successful working with children ages 5-8.
I've taught math to hundreds of children in the public schools, and the improvement among my students is impressive.
To some, math comes naturally but others need to try a variety of methods before they find one that works for them.
Your child won't hate math, once successful. In fact, you will really be surprised at the improvements that can be made.
English and Accent Reduction
I've taught classes in English as a Second Language, and I have also given private lessons. Pictures, cartoons, and motions make learning a little easier.
Being a reading specialist, I find phonics extremely important for both reading and spelling. I've had courses in Linguistics as well as ESL courses, but most of all I've had experience teaching children phonics from various programs.
Reading is My Specialty
I'm a qualified teacher and reading specialist, and I have an MA in Education as well. I know a variety of ways to teach reading. Not all methods are best for every student. I'm familiar with using a variety of methods and materials. One may learn best by using phonics, sight, whole language, the neurological impress method, or a combination of many.
I taught a class of Severely Emotionally Disturbed children for a year. I recently substituted in a class where a five year never drank from anything but a bottle. I took him aside, and within twenty minutes he happily drank from a cup.
Most of my students have become amazing spellers. Every student learns in a different way. Some students find that they spell best if they sound out the word, others look at the shape of the word, and still others find it easier to learn when the missing letter is highlighted. It's important to try a variety of methods.
Over the years, I have learned a number of techniques that help students study. Study skills include more than just when and where the student studies, but how they can best use their time. For example, when they study for a spelling test, instead of going over and over the word, the letter missed is written in a different color making it much easier to learn.
