Though currently carrying a 4.0 GPA, I wasn't always a good student. As someone who has seen the high costs of high school slacking and made a full recovery in my college career, I can offer key perspective to students who aren't living up to their potentials. I know what it takes to get it together, and can help them get there without seeming patronizing because I know exactly what it's like to be in their shoes.

Most of my students are remedial, but I also love working with gifted and talented students, either finding ways to engage them in day-to-day schoolwork or helping to provide an extra challenge.

My introduction to tutoring was through my first college in Las Vegas, in their peer tutoring program. At the time I was exploring a number of different majors, and took classes from Fencing to French to Middle Eastern Dance. I continued tutoring as I moved to Southern California and eventually went back to school, first for Psychology and then for Bioengineering. Over my various schools and majors, I've studied a broad range of subjects, including six languages (currently I'm working on Arabic). My plan is to move from a degree in bioengineering into medical school, and I'm considering becoming a surgeon.

My most-requested subjects are test preps, mainly ASVAB, SAT, and GED. I've also done quite a bit of high-school math, and K-12 reading and writing. I'm a patient but enthusiastic tutor, providing a gently structured environment for students to thrive. I love teaching, and I do my best to engage students' natural curiosity in whatever subject I'm presenting. At the heart of my approach is fostering vital student skills which will help the student move on from my tutelage a more confident and independent scholar.

In addition to traditional face-to-face tutoring, I also offer scheduled and as-needed remote tutoring at a reduced hourly rate. This can be a great option for students who need less oversight, are located outside my travel area, or have a smaller budget. Email me for more information about this approach.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASVAB

I scored very highly on the ASVAB (overall 93), and I've helped peers turn failing scores into career victories. Most of my tutoring has been in overall test preparation along with verbal and math test areas. I work with an ASVAB prep textbook to keep lessons on-track for ASVAB-required subjects.

I consider it an honor to help future soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen reach their full potential in the US Armed Forces.

Geometry

Geometry is one of my most commonly-requested subjects. It's often difficult for algebra-minded students to succeed in geometry, so I help them understand geometry in algebraic terms wherever possible. I've been tutoring geometry for about four years, and most of my students see a letter grade improvement in the first month with me.

Reading

Reading is one of my most frequently requested subjects. From first-time readers at five or six to older kids and adults struggling with reading comprehension or age-appropriate vocabulary, I've worked with a vast range of students and skill levels.

I'm compassionate and patient, offering students appropriate reading materials which are a little bit challenging, but not so far ahead that they can't be understood. I've worked with Kindergarteners at the beginning stages of letter recognition and phonics and adults preparing for the ASVAB or GED who are behind on reading skills.

Study Skills

The foundation of all my tutoring subjects is rooted in good study skills. Taking good notes, learning to use textbooks and other resources fully, and independent problem solving skills are key to academic success. Study skills students will learn how to take and organize notes, create study aids, make the most of textbooks, and develop good study habits.

I have two students who are just about ready to take the ASVAB, finishing up their prep courses with me and on to bigger and better things. The shutdown delayed things for many recruits, but things are back to normal now! Having these two phase out also means I have space in my schedule again. I'm now taking new students Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday morning/early afternoon.

I've heard this sentiment over and over--sometimes from students, and sometimes, I'll admit, in my own head. Last night, I was working on my own math homework, and there was one problem I just couldn't get my head around. I read the book, looked back at my class notes, and even sat down with a tutor for a while, and still, when I tried a new problem of the same type on my own, it just... read more

My last session with a student is always exciting. When Colton came to me, he'd taken the ASVAB a couple times, scoring below the minimum of 30 each time. After some hard work and preparation, Colton's practice ASVAB score is up above 60, and tomorrow morning he goes to take the full-length test. When he passes, his career as a sailor will finally begin. Colton's been working hard for months,... read more
