I am a retired special education teacher. My experience includes all stages of the special education system including initial screening, testing, test analysis, disability identification, designing of their educational programs and implementation of the specialized instruction. I have taught students with disabilities that include autism including Asberger's Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, low vision/blind, language delays in young children, learning disabilities in older children, mental retardation in five year olds through 15 year olds, including English Language Learners who needed prescriptive tutoring before special education was instituted. I also taught religious school courses.
I love connecting with children. I honor the trust they put in me, and I honor the trust their families put in me. I have faith in their abilities to learn, and I hold that in front of me every moment I am with them in the learning process we share together. It is more than a skill I am endeavoring to instill. Children need to be open to the wondrous aspect of knowledge. When they feel this excitement, it awakens their curiosity, and that 'opens up the soil' for the planting of the seed which grows into a plant with many flowers, one of which is the skill we started with.
I look forward to the opportunity to connect with your child. I know we can move him or her along the path to proficiency and even more, to the appreciation of the wonder of this world in which we all live.
I am an experienced special educator who has modified work for ADHD and ADD students in the classroom and in the resource room. Typically these students experience success by taking the subject and breaking it down into individual concepts introduced one at a time and getting their feedback after each step. The use of manipulatives and visual aids link the subject with the student, and results in comprehension.
I am an experienced special educator who has taught small groups of K-6 students in the resource room, as well as regular education students who need one-on-one help in the classroom when working with mainstreamed students. I have taught classes in remedial reading, writing and prewriting strategies, math skills K-6, science and social studies.
I am a retired special education teacher. I have taught remedial reading in grades K and 1 using phonemic awareness exercises and phonics to form the foundation for decoding unfamiliar words. Letter squares and blocks are useful as manipulatives. As the students learn to chunk words, they see the similarities in word families (-at, -it, etc.) and can identify these words in text. Meaning starts to build as they see the words in context.
I am an experienced special educator who has provided memory and study strategies to students with a wide variety of learning exceptionalities such as ADHD, learning disabilities, autism and emotional disturbance. In general these students have impaired ability to focus and so need individualized approaches to engage the material. Breaking the content down into subconcepts, and repetition of key concepts has been successful. If parents help the chances of success are greatly increased.
