I am a Registered Civil Engineer (PE) specialized in Coastal, Hydraulic, Ocean, and Water Resources Engineering because:
1. My coursework for Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. Degrees is interesting in applied mathematics, hydrodynamics, environmental fluid mechanics, numerical methods of partial differential equations, computational fluid mechanics, and engineering hydrology.
2. My capabilities build through independent studies for Bachelor's, Master’s and Ph.D. Degrees, emphasizing on lake and river hydrodynamics, coastal and estuarine circulations, and inundation in both estuarine tidal flats and riverine flood planes due to storm surge induced by hurricane and/or tsunami.
3. My experiences collect from water resources engineering practice, focusing on hydraulic and hydrologic modelings, stormwater protection, and floodplain management.
I chose to study the oscillations of semi-enclosed water body (Estuary, Lake, and Harbor) induced by hurricanes after the occurrence of Hurricane Katrina on 2005 for my Ph.D. degree. In order to accomplish this goal, I built a numerical model using Finite-Volume Method (FVM) to solve the depth-averaged, non-linear shallow water equations (NLSW) governing the wind-induced oscillations in semi-enclosed water body.
I performed the hydraulic and hydrologic analyses for the design of storm sewer and conducted the design of the storm sewer for the land development design projects. During my tenure with L. D. King, I was in charge of the design of storm sewer for the well-known massive residential development project, the Preserve at Chino, of the City of Chino, California.
I am very interested in the Instructor of Civil Engineering at WyzAnt. I believe that my coursework for B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees, interesting in hydrodynamics, environmental fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, engineering hydrology, and irrigation and drainage engineering, my capabilities through independent studies for both Master’s and Ph.D. Degrees, emphasizing on lake and river hydrodynamics, numerical simulations of coastal and estuarine circulations, and inundation in beach and coastal communities due to storm surge, and my experiences from water resources engineering practice, focusing on hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, floodplain management, and storm water protection, shall be of value to WyzAnt.
I obtained my B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering from National Taiwan University (NTU) on June 1993. Through the core courses for the Agricultural Engineering program of NTU, I equipped the fundamental knowledge in engineering mathematics, numerical analysis, fluid mechanics, hydrology, groundwater, water resources engineering, drainage and irrigation engineering, and geotechnical engineering.
I obtained my M.S. degree in Civil Engineering specialized in Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydrology (EFM&H) from Stanford University on June 16, 1996. My advisor is Dr. Robert L. Street, the world-renown expert in turbulence and computational simulations of turbulent flows in natural environments. Under his advisement, I focused my study in advanced engineering mathematics, advanced numerical analysis, hydrodynamics, environmental fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, contaminants transport processes, water treatment processes, and waste water treatment processes.
I received an offering as a Staff Engineer at L.D. King, Inc. (LD King) in Ontario, California on February 10, 2004. At LD King, I performed the hydraulic and hydrologic analyses for the design of storm sewer in the land development projects and conducted the design of storm sewer in the land development projects. In detail, I was in charge of the design of storm sewer in the well-known massive residential development project, the Preserve at Chino, of the City of Chino, California. Furthermore, I became the Registered Civil Engineer (Professional Engineer) on June 25, 2004. Although I possessed abilities, capabilities, and experiences to be a successful water resources engineer, I decided to pursue my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Civil Engineering; hence, I left LD King on December 9, 2004.
I obtained my Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from University of Southern California (USC) on December 16, 2010. My Ph.D. advisors are 1. Dr. Jiin-Jen L, the world-renown expert in harbor resonance phenomena and consequent damages, 2. Dr. L. Carter W, the world-renown expert in numerical analyses for engineering applications, especially in Finite-Element Method (FEM), and 3. Dr. Iraj N, the world-renown expert in Urban Hydrology, and the Chief Hydrologist of the County of Los Angeles. Under the advisement and the guidance of Drs. L, W, and N, I emphasized my courses in applied mathematics, advanced numerical analysis, advanced fluid mechanics, ocean and coastal engineering, and flood control hydrology and chose to study the oscillations of semi-enclosed water body induced by hurricanes after the occurrence of Hurricane Katrina on 2005. In order to accomplish this research, I built a numerical model using Finite-Volume Method (FVM) to solve the depth-averaged, non-linear shallow water equations (NLSW) governing the wind-induced oscillations in semi-enclosed water body. Because of my research achievements, I was invited to speech at the International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE) 2010 in Shanghai, China, and Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) Conference 2010 in Los Angeles, California, to demonstrate my research.
