I've been working with students aged 10-80 for twenty years. English is my passion, and I can make it yours too. I have the training (California Teaching Credential, Master's from USC), the professional experience (both private and public schools), knowledge of English, and the enthusiasm to help you reach the goals you want to reach. I've taught and tutored TOEFL and Cambridge exams, and have a proven track record. One recent TOEFL student was accepted in a Doctoral program at Stanford. I expect you to work, but I'm easy to get along with, I'm responsive to your needs, and I can make the mysteries clear in this highly-complex language of English.

I expect the student to be an active partner in the learning process. It wastes my time and yours to teach you what you already know. It's equally a time-waster if I have to hunt for your weaknesses. Your best tool as a student is to know what you can and cannot do, and to communicate that to me. Then, with me as the guide, we can explore and map your new educational territory. I believe that your background, attitude, and beliefs are key in your learning, and I will do everything possible to support your growth to the point where you no longer need my help.

Vocabulary

You can't say what you want to say if you don't have the right words. English has at least 650,000 words (maybe 1.2 million). Nobody knows them all, but for success in college, or simply to sound intelligent, you need to "up your game."

Grammar

To control the language, to make it do what you want it to do, you must understand the purposes of the various grammatical structures. Once learned, they are never forgotten, but a good guide (tutor) can clarify where books only confuse.

Writing

Writing is the main measure of your understanding of material in most university classes. If you can't write, you can't get the grades you need. In many jobs, clear writing is the key to promotion. Whatever your writing needs, I can help.

English

Essay structure, reading comprehension, development and integration of correct grammar, appropriate audience and purpose all factor into success in academic English. Mastery is possible.

ESL/ESOL

20 years of experience with English Learners at all levels, and from ages 10 to 80. A TESOL Master's Degree from USC. Grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation. You can master it all.

Literature

What makes a book a "classic?" When a story is described as "gothic," what is meant? How do you get past the complex language of Dickens or Austen to the insightful commentaries on human nature that they are both justifiably famous for? If you can "get into" literature, the world is yours.

SAT Writing

You may be a good writer, but the SAT may not think so. Learn the ins and outs of what is expected, and how to craft a high-scoring essay under pressure, without the benefit of time and thoughtfulness practiced in "process writing."

TOEFL

You have to have the basic skills in English to even attempt the TOEFL, but basic skills won't get you the scores you want. Build on your foundation with a strong combination of practice and expert critique.

Public Speaking

My degree is in Dramatic Art, I was a professional actor for ten years, and I have taught public speaking for Albany Adult Education.

CBEST

As a holder of a California Clear Credential (English), I clearly have taken and passed the CBEST. My undergraduate mathematics studies, plus my time spent teaching middle school math, make me more than qualified to tutor the math portion, and I have been an English/ESL teacher for 20 years.

How do I receive a discount?

Save between 5 and 15% on tutoring by purchasing credit with one of our prepaid discount packages. You can buy one of our standard 5, 10 or 15% packages or customize your own package based on how much tutoring you need. The credit you purchase can be used towards any tutor at any time and does not expire. If you do not use the entire package, we will simply deduct what you did spend on tutoring from your original purchase price and give you a refund. Discount packages start as low as $190.
