I have taught children from nursery to the sixth grade and enjoy teaching small groups or one on one. This gives me much enjoyment when I can be of help.
My expertise lies in English, grammar, vocabulary, reading, spelling and phonics.
Interactive teaching is one of the most effective ways I have used for a child to learn as well as visual. This is why I breakdown subjects to give the student ways to remember what is being taught.
Children in grades 1-6 I give a short quiz to in determining the level of learning level best suited. I always take more time and extra care with those that have special circumstances.
Younger children, I use visual and other interactive aids to stimulate their comprehension.
Previous experience includes but is not limited to: taking time with those that learn slower than others and those that hold in problems, which interfere in retaining and comprehending, as well as gaining their trust by being kind, understanding and listening to them.
On occasions I’ve had students that are withdrawn and don’t want to speak or participate. I found patience and persistence in talking to them and encouraging them to interact allowing them to feel that someone cares brings out the most silent ones.
When some of my students had spelling problems, I found clever ways of sounding out the word or some sort of humorous saying to help them remember how to spell the word.
Interactive methods used are:
Participating in various games to stimulate the mind to retain what is taught.
Responds to visual aids, including phonics, pictures children relate to according to the subject.
Reading allowed in unison
Give activities to keep attention focus
My experience and knowledge of science extends from the simplest experiment of growing a seed in a milk carton filled with dirt to plotting the course of a planet for physics.
Breaking down the basics of how and what makes machines move, plants grow, insects differ from arachnids, what makes the weather and much more is my specialty.
In teaching English I first evaluate the students knowledge of English through a series of tests. Then I proceed to assist in areas of need, such as reading that adds new words and their meanings to vocabulary, correct spelling, correct grammar, pronunciation, and comprehension of both written and spoken English.
Not only am I good with computer applications like MS Office, but I can troubleshoot a number of problems on most computers, such as error messages, browser settings, installing and uninstalling programs and backing up files.
I am proficient in English grammar and can easily identify what part of grammar verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions are. I can assist in choosing the correct part of the English language not only for better communication, but a better understanding and command of the language for both the speaker and listener.
I've always made A's in spelling and can teach tips and tricks in becoming excellent in correctly spelling common and some uncommon words in the English language.
I will teach you how to add formulas and text to your spreadsheet, perform basic math operations such as summing columns and rows of figures, graphing or charting data, sorting and filtering data to find specific information, adjust columns and rows to accommodate data.
In using Microsoft Outlook I will teach you how to set up an email account using the wizard, create folders to organize your emails, add/delete contacts for the address book, set up calendar alerts, how to create a signature block, how to block unwanted emails/web site, schedule meetings, archiving, task manager, contact manager, journal, note taking, and keyboard shortcuts.
For those who have a gmail account through Google, I will show you how to access this account through Outlook.
I have used MS Word for many years and can not only type basic letters, but can add images, spell check, center, adjust paragraphs, add symbols, track changes, add comments, add page numbers, make labels, business cards, greeting cards, and much more.
In teaching someone to read English, I use vowel and consonant phonics. This would be the breakdown of how each letter sounds, including long and short vowel sounds, and diphthongs. I also use synthetic phonics, which involves examining every letter within the word as an individual sound in the order in which they appear and then blending those sounds together.
How I teach reading:
1. Evaluate comprehension of text.
2. Assist in building new vocabulary.
3. Assist in pronunciation of the words using phonics.
4. Assist in learning to spell new words.
5. Print awareness: understanding print has different functions depending on context; menus list food choices, books tell stories, and signs make an announcement such as warning of danger. Print awareness is organized as read from left to right and top to bottom; also, words consist of letters and spaces appear between words.
Successful study skills I’ve used are:
1. Memorizing or learn by rote, includes review notes and/or rewriting them.
2. Reading and listening:
a. Preview-look over major headings or points in syllabus.
b. Questions-thoroughly study questions to be answered and see how they are formulated.
c. Read all reference material and all information that best relates to chosen questions.
d. Surmise the topic the best way that suites the student including written notes, flow diagrams, spider diagrams, labeled diagrams, or voice recordings.
e. Test-answer questions created in question step as fully as possible
3. Cues or flash cards
4. Time management using the traffic light system:
a. Green: topics to be studied first; important and also simple
b. Amber: topics to be studied next; important but time-consuming
c. Red: lowest priority; complex and not vital
My acting experience includes feature films, television, public service announcements and local stage productions. I’ve studied improvisation, cold reading and voice. I can help with voice projection, stage presence, as well as costume and makeup.
